It's been a few of weeks since the Mealworm Palace was built and populated. It took a while for the eggs to hatch and them for the larvae to grow to a size where I could see them moving around in the bran.
They are big enough to see easily now, and I can see where they are eating into the vegetable cuttings I put in there. They use the vegetable material to get water from, not for its nutrient content.
At the rate they're growing, I think they'll be ready for feeding to the chooks and fish next week.
The only problem I've had is that there are a species of moth that seem to be breeding up. They're not in huge numbers, I see a few every day and they don't seem to be doing any damage. The palace is quite secure, so they were probably in the bran when I bought it.
I'm impressed by the simplicity of this design and the only flaw is that when I pull out the top drawer for the beetles, I also need to pull out the second drawer because of all the bran that falls out from the first. I've put an aluminium cooking tray under the palace to catch most of it but some still escapes onto the floor.
