Facebook showed me a memory today. Exactly today, many years ago, my then-eight-year-old daughter had told me at breakfast that there is junk-DNA at the ends of chromosomes. That junk-DNA shortens every time a cell divides. When it runs out, the cell stops dividing to help prevent cancer. But germ line cells have enzymes that repair DNA allowing them to keep dividing forever. Naked mole rats have cells where the junk-DNA keeps being repaired endlessly but that the animal never gets cancer, either. She told me she'd learned this from some popular science video on YouTube.
She had learned enough English by that time to be able to read Harry Potters in the original language. I bought her a smart phone the summer before first grade. I was a bit hesitant because I thought it could be harmful if she became addicted to her smartphone. The main reason I bought her the phone was to be able to contact her any time because she started school and because it is normal for children to walk to school and back unsupervised from the very beginning where I live.
Older kids and most adults are glued to their phones anyway these days. Mine learned a few useful skills and made a few friends in foreign countries thanks to her access to the internet from early on. The distant friendships proved very good for her because the social environment in her first school was not healthy unlike later.
What is your opinion on children allowed access to smart devices and the internet? I know there are risks involved and a parent must be aware of them and try and maintain some awareness of what is going on in his/her child's online life.
I'm not a parent yet but I will say you should know the kind of child you have, if he/she listens to you then you can get a phone for them. My opinion though.
That makes a lot sense. If you have a kid who is hard to control, then giving them a smartphone may be a mistake.
Yes, that's exactly my point 👍👍
That's a brilliant shot!
Nothing wrong with phones and the internet if you get the real world into the mix too! There's a lot to learn on the internet! I'm learning about Finland here.. ;)
Unfortunately, as in most parts of life, most people are lazy and don't pay attention,
that's were the trouble can start with the little darlings. :)
Yes, it's a really nice shot. I wish I had taken it. The source is linked to below it. It's in public domain.
lol! Learned something there! Didn't notice it..
Thanks!
