We have had this cactus for more years than we can remember. It was a gift from my wife's cousin Meloney when she first visited us in our new home in Cape town, South Africa.
It was a tiny little thumb sized thing which just sat in the window year in year out until one year it bloomed with these lovely tiny pink flowers. I thought it was just beautiful.
It was winter in the southern hemisphere at the time of it's first blooming. June - August. This is what the cactus in bloom looks like today. We love this little cactus and it is a remarkable plant.
The thing that often gives me pause for thought is the fact that in 8 years of living in Cape Town. The cactus never grew beyond it's original thumb size. It flowered occasionally but never grew?
When we returned to the UK, somehow along with all the other crap that we stuffed into the 40 foot home bound container. This little cactus jumped aboard.
When we discovered that it had made it to the UK we thought it looked a little dried out and dead so we watered it. Something that we had never done in South Africa. The really weird thing was that as soon as we watered it. It began to grow?
We had always assumed that you don't water cacti. They are desert plants and so you don't need to care for them much...right?
They are often given to people as a symbol of endurance and strength. I didn't know this until today when I looked it up.
A flowering cactus in some Native American cultures is symbolic of a mothers love?
"The cactus flower is a symbol of maternal love because it can endure and thrive in harsh conditions and therefore symbolic of a mother's unconditional love"
I had no clue as to this symbolic meaning but just love it when the cactus blooms. It always makes me smile and remember good times in South Africa and proves the old adage. You can learn something new every day

The Cape buffalo is a pretty powerful creature. It lifted the back of the truck at one point in the chase with it's horns! It kills more people every year than Lions do. Yikes! Lol

I'm suprised it survived if you never watered it. Surely everything, even desert plants need some water?
Apparently not. They collect enough moisture from the atmosphere to survive long periods of drought. We are/were pretty amazed that it survived so long with no help from us? It's very happy now with it's own little feeder too. :)

Isn't it a great gift that just keeps giving year after year. The Bon-sai is another favorite of mine too. Glad to hear your one is doing so well.
Yes, it IS a great gift! I had a Christmas Cactus for years, and always thought of it as a present when it bloomed at Christmastime each year 🎉
Cute little plant ... if cacti can be called cute. I knew you had to water cactus but just not very much. Lots of sun and little rain:) I learned about the symbolism of cactus though. I think I might need one for around the house.

Oh yeah they are tough, but still need some water now and again! I love cacti!!
We didn't water it in almost 8 years and it survived but never grew. Soon as we gave it some water...boom sprouting all over the place.

hi, my friend has been planting this cactus for quite some time but until now not yet flowering, what is not the same kind of cactus that friend have
They flower at different times. You will have to look up this cactus and see when it will flower. :)
