How should posts get ranked on Steemit?
I think the system to rank posts on Steemit is very primitive and absolutely not fraud proof. Why don't they improve this? The most important metric right now to rank posts is based on how much upvotes a post gets. We all know by now that getting much upvotes doesn't mean a post is high quality, because you can just buy them.
This is also the reason why instagram is so spammy nowadays. They are a bot friendly platform and posts get ranked based on comments and likes. So it's very easy to abuse a system like that with bots. Even a 10 year old child could do it.
While youtube has this figured out a lot better imo. The most important metric where youtube video's are ranked on nowadays is watch time. Because they figured out that if people watch a video till the end, then it must be really interesting. They used to rank video's on how much likes and comments you received, but it's very easy to just buy likes and comments.
Would it not make sense to include other things into rankings than just upvotes? For example if you have a post with 100 sbd in upvotes and zero comments and resteems with no content and just a referral link. And you have another post with 100 sbd upvotes, 500 words original article, 15 comments and 3 resteems than it's probably more popular than the first post.
- The current system is good
- It should be improved
- Someone should build a new (d)app with a better algorithm to rank posts
- No opinion
- Don't know
- Other

This should be done by Steemit developers, not external dapps

Definitely should be improved as the current system is based on who can mooch off the most votes.
I reckon engagement is a good metric, time spent on post and gaging weather users actually read it. Also on recommendations based on your interest. If you like certain topics etc. As search really sucks for these types of thing and tagging system is mediocre!

It shouldn't be based on monetary value.
Yes I do agree with you that the current ranking system is a bit out of track. So my answer would be
I would suggest we look at models that search engines have used. Such as assigning a domain authority (DA) and content authority (CA) rating to individual steam pages. These ratings would be used to generate a quality score (QS) for individual posts. People could search for post with the certain level of QS. . Your reputation would still play in general front page listings however you can also search for quality score level based on likes you receive from authors with a high domain authority or continent authority.
I'm not an algorithm programmer though so how to do this I have no idea.. lol

It should be improved and most of the Steemians are aware of this issue and in my opinion over the period of time it will improve. And in my opinion the more adoption will leads to more changes. Stay blessed.

I think we should look at dapps like steev and have various feeds like AI curation, friend curation/resteem/ your feed/
You should also be able to rank your feed by posts chronological as default, then update your settings to by most votes, most comments, highest payout, author reputation or even filter by any of these like show me posts of authors 55-60 Rep only or posts with 5-10 comments only
Good answer, i agree 100%

Current system allows curator to find the best posts manually. There is no filtering for Top commented or popular based on location.
The Steemit website should have these kinds option for all or otherwise someone should create better DApp on Steem blockchain.
Currently @Partiko is meeting this expectation.
Don't know about partiko. I like it for mobile phone but their search engine sucks and i think the feed is not less of a mess than on steemit.

I honestly don't care about Steemit at this point. I'm happy it existed, it's what got me & many others to try out Steem, but there's so many better frontends out there now.
@steempeak & @steeveapp are two that come to mind.

I believe a front end like https://www.steeve.app/ can provide a partial answer to this answer with AI involved. ;)

force promoted content to be exhibit between X ordinary posts in every feed, not only in a special "promoted section" feed.
This could attract more advertisers to invest on Steem.

Trending page is a joke with it's paid for votes. I never go there for that reason. I just try to find good content creators and build engagement with them.

I hope a post with comments is better but what is a comment? One word? The respond of a bot?
Perhaps a good start would be a max of a certain amount of words.

I think tracking engaging activities should be included, not just post content like "thank you" or "well done". The comments should be what adds value to the post. Cheers
