Shadows and reflections contest entry: @nineclaws
GRASP
For months I’ve been experimenting with incorporating colours into shadows, reflected colours, and painting with sunlight. I began taking these kinds of photos by accident. It then started developing all on its own and I’ve gone to a wild place of anything goes. It’s whatever I imagine trying next with this process to create new images until it’s all used up. Then there will be something new. There always is.
APPEAL
Most of the time, with any creative process I do, I work primarily intuitively. Expressing that experience in words is not so easy. It’s in the doing that it becomes known. As I write this, I am thinking of the best way to describe an intuitive process that will make it relatable.
It’s akin to a child playing, say on a beach, creating with sand, stones, shells, and so forth. As a child plays, a sense of how to do something will develop organically in this natural experience. This happens without being shown how to do something beforehand. Play and a natural flow are occurring. Conscious thinking doesn’t factor into it much, if at all. There is a knowing and doing all at the same time.
I approached creating these photos in a manner very similar to playing like a child. In fact, it brings me back to the experience of being a child when I create. There is this wonder, fascination, and lightness of heart that occurs.
CHAINED
At this point, there are many objects I use to create these types of photos, somewhere around at least sixty. These include various possessions I have and all manner of objects I pick up wherever I find them. It’s a rich treasure trove of garbage to choose from where I live. I’ve used pieces of glass, plastics, pieces of mirror, bottles (glass and plastic), metal objects, and much more. It’s whatever catches my eye when I’m outside walking.
CHAINED CLOSEUP
For this series of photos, I used a large wine bottle as the main shadow to build on. Yes, the wine bottle still had some wine in it, red, and if I wasn’t already using it for cooking, I sure would be now due to the sun exposure. Other elements I incorporated for the shadows are my hand, some tree branches, a pair of hinged handcuffs, and an old lens.
DANGLING POINT
The colours in all of these shadow photos were created by using the sunlight reflected through the wine bottle, that brilliant yellowish colour. I’ve noticed that sunlight alters the colour of the glass as it passes through, since this bottle is actually green. The same occurs with other coloured bottles; sunlight literally lightens the colour.
WHAT POINT?
The blues, greens, and purples were created with several pieces of reflective metallic plastic that I arranged to reflect the sunlight onto the shadow. The white light in “Appeal” and “Internal Glow” were created with an old lens.
CUFF RELEASE
Shadows and reflections have been a subject of interest for years, back to when I was a child. I also love tones, black, white, greys. I had never thought of shadows with colours before this year. I’m not even sure why I went in this direction, aside from my intuition leading me there.
These were fun to create and at the same time I sweated through the process, dealing with the wind, the light changing, getting angles correct in tight quarters, and paying attention so I didn’t fall since I was standing on a crate to take the shots.
The sweating about all of it….I didn’t feel that until I was finished shooting a few hours later. That’s when I notice the cramps, kinks, and yes, literally sweat. That’s the intuitive process when fully in the flow. All attention is directed towards focusing on moving with the flow of that creative river in an intimate dance as one.
INTERNAL GLOW
All photos taken by Nine with a Pentax digital 35mm camera and 90mm Tamron Macro lens.
Using bottle a great idea to obtain completely different feel on photography. Leaving wine, well not so much, will only be good for cooking as you said @nineclaws

Thank you! Leftovers of wine (not the good stuff) get used for cooking. This particular bottle was a run of the mill leftover half full one from an event I helped organize. I used it for cooking only until I took these photos. 😂
It's wonderful to see some of your gorgeous colored shadow photos again!
Thanks so much @melinda010100! I was happy to be able to put something together for the contest.
Such beautiful and creative photo art, I love it. And I can totally relate to this - that is literally me after a photoshoot 😊.
Love the last one with the lens reflections. I am always a hunter for those when I am out and about.
Happy shooting and creating!
Thank you! Hahaha, someone who relates, that's wonderful to hear that I'm not alone.
I almost did not include the last one but had the feeling I ought to. Good to hear it's appealing. I found a very cool lens on the ground once, I think it's from a telescope. No idea how someone lost such a thing but it's fun to use in photography. Yes, keep an eye out for them, they are great to play with.
Wow these pictures are beautiful
Thank you! Is there one in particular that's a favourite for you?
It's a tough choice between the first and the last for me
Well you've narrowed it down further than I have. I haven't been able to narrow it down at all, lol
It wasn't easy to pick out those two each time I look at any of the pics it looks more beautiful than the last, nice work👌🏾
Thank you, I like your choices!
Internal glow looks like hourglass hips—hashtag nice drawls. Funny how the teeth in the handcuff didn't reflect.
Kids. You know if you put a handful of'em around a table because they can't stand up, they'll all pick themselves up and hold themselves up by hand against the table? One will, then another, another, eventually they're all standing.
And if you put a pair of headphones on just one toddler and turn up some music, that toddler will dance uncontrollably. Dancing toddler will beat their hands against the table, buckling at the knees, bustin some John Travolta shit.
And did you know all the other toddlers holding themselves up against the same table will repeat headphone toddlers dance moves? Each surrounding toddler will instinctually begin dancing to no music because they're not wearing headphones or listening to any, they're following.
How long's it been now, forever? Forever and we still don't make our own decisions. We knowingly follow one unknown toddler who literally doesn't know when shit's running down their leg. Humanity's too soft today, beyond soft. Mom still wipes their ass before they're off to college in the morning.
Overzealous about what the other toddler is listening to, they never grasped they themselves can't hear anything. "Awe!"
I think I might a went off script a little bit
Nice, LOL, really nice drawls. Funny how old black hinged handcuffs don't reflect light the way the shiny new ones do. Btw, the angle that was shot at, the cuffs were placed on the bottle and meant to create a shadow, not reflection. 😉 Shadow Cuffs....you know, that shadow we all have 😉. Maybe I should have included the storyline that goes with this series. I thought it might be a bit heavy and when writing this, it didn't end up going in that direction with the words...only the images.
This is something I've never experienced when I was growing up:
I can see what you're saying about toddlers. Group behaviour
Regarding what you've said, I think questions need to be asked. Such as, why is it like this? How did it become like this? What is my role in society? How have I been impacted and/or participated in the same behaviour, either knowingly or unknowingly? Have I influenced others knowingly/unknowingly to follow instead of lead themselves? Questions like that are, in my opinion, important ones to explore.
How did we learn this kind of behaviour? How do we deprogram ourselves and learn different ways?
As you know, I'm totally down with anything in comments. Besides, you've given fodder to work with, as you always do. Thanks for that and checking my post out. I can always count on you leaving me meat and bones to reply to. 😁
I liked internal glow
Thank you @diebitch. I almost didn't include that one. 😊
Ah, now i see why you ordered six bottles... 😁 Awesome effects!
Thank you! HAHAHA! Yes, crappy wine for photography use and good wine for drinking.
Wow these are insanely cool! I'm so glad that I found your post through the Shadows & Reflections challenge. The different effects you have managed to achieve are really intriguing. Awesome post and thanks for sharing your "playing" as you call it, reminded each of us that we need to set aside time for our inner child - I think we're most creative when we're in that space!
Thank you!! Yes, definitely "playing"....lots of wonderful experiences to be had that way. My father taught me how to keep that inner child alive and thriving. I agree, we are most creative when we're in that space.
Wow you explained your creative process extremely well Nine. I love how you played around with this medium and the colors. I am glad that you turned simple objects like plastic, bottles and glass into creative pieces.
Thank you @moon-city. There's a lot that goes unnoticed with the most mundane and for some reason, it seems to draw my attention. It's always been that way.
Excellent results of your creative experiment ! I hope to see you among the winners, @nineclaws !
Thank you so much for your support @olgavita! Some experiments don't work out but this one did. No matter how it goes, it's all an opportunity to learn.
This is brilliant and creative!
I like the mix of reflected colours. Nicely done! 😊
Thank you @kemmyb, I appreciate you checking my photos out. 😊
You got the arty entry wow really cool
Good luck in the contest
Thank you @brittandjosie, I really appreciate your support. 😊
great post. best of luck in the contest
Thank you @eolianpariah!
Internal glow would be my favorite. I love how those colors shadows work together.
Glad all that gymnastics🤸♂️ you did paid off.
Cool!
It's a good way to get stretching and some weird exercises in, lol.
Thanks very much @sofs-su! The last one is a bit different than the others, since it was a different layout than the previous ones. It's now evolved past using multiple objects into something else that I have tested a bit but have not set up to do photos yet. That will also include shadows and colours. One thing leads into many things to explore, LOL.
There is nothing like exploration and discovery. However, be careful when you do those weird stretching exercises standing on those crates. LOL
I add in two, one for each foot when I need more limbering up while watching carefully, LOL
Good on you!! Take care.
You know if you don't hear from me in weeks, that one of the crates got me...that or the ravines, LOL
