[EP117] - The huge war being fought on Instagram...

in #dtube7 years ago

Hi everyone!
Hope you're all well!

This title isn't really accurate... a war is usually when 2 or more sides are battling it out... but the war on Instagram is really just one side trying to indoctrinate young 'uns with memes and mis-information.

I've said before that the are so many variables to every situation, every story, every study and research project that no one can really know anything as 'Truth'... and that the best way to approach the huge amount of information is with some common-sense about what's likely to be accurate, what's likely to be inaccurate, some compassion and an idea on the motives behind the person trying to convince you of something.

Unfortunately Instagram is being misused by many vocal minority groups to spread misinformation. It's tough because I think it is important to question a lot of things, but there's also a point where people know they're just spreading straight up lies in order to get what they want.

The problem is that Instagram's algorithm... which was designed to show you things you like based on something you recently looked at, makes it so incredibly easy for alt-right content to target young people who will be eligible to vote in the next couple of years. There are a ton of alt-right account with hundreds of thousands of followers that share memes designed to encourage people to believe that racism is good, machine-guns will protect you from the government, and that a lot of proven science is false.

This war is one-sided... the alt-left just hasn't embraced this kind of meme/bullying culture, and so the vocal minority seems like the majority. Of course the alt-right and the alt-left tend to be unrelenting and extreme in their viewpoints, and the vast majority of the people use common-sense, can see valid points on all sides and sit in the middle... but if Gen Z is spending a huge amount of time on Instagram and nowhere else, then what else are they supposed to believe.

Facebook and Twitter tend to have an older, more balanced crowd. The older people on Instagram really don't use it to socialize outside of their friends and family.

We have to get Gen Z on Steem. People are so much nicer here, comments are usually well-thought out and sensible... and while there is definitely alt-right groups on Steem as well, which is to be expected on a non-censureable platform, but there is also way more normal people with normal viewpoints... and no algorithm that silos people. I accidentally find amazing people with very different opinions all the time.

Thanks for watching!
