WHAT DOES STEEM NEED?

I really do really don't know. Unlike many of the supposed experts on everything crypto, I don't not have a model or codes that will change things positively on here. And to be quite frank neither do they-- the supposed experts. But they get a thumbs up for their effort. The thing is steem's ecosystem is young, dynamic and evolving. It's unlikely that anyone fully grasp it well enough to proffer lasting solutions to some of its major problems. Yes we can make some tweaks here and there and hope/speculate but the reality is that none of these changes or proposed changes will positively enhance user's experience. I suggest changes be made not forced and give the system time! We can't match with the success of Facebook or Twitter, not in a short time of our existence. We need time to grow.

I've been here for about three months and in this short time a lot of exciting initiatives have been implemented. But as an end-user, none of these changes have significantly changed my experience, neither has it solved most of the problems we have been talking about (some may argue otherwise). Take for example HF20, at some point I was championing it, at another point I was lamenting about how negatively it affected my ability to interact with the system, and now, well I'm indifferent about it because everything is back to the status quo-- spammers are spamming, shitposts still making headlines, we are yet to get onboarders sweeping in as speculated, and the price of steem is still low. I can go on and on but you get my point-- everything is still very much the same.

Now, there is an ongoing conversation about changing the reward system. Personally I do not consider this to be a fundamental issue because it will neither improve significantly user's experience, rather it might have a negative impact on the steem ecosystem (the madness of HF20 should still be fresh in our minds).

As an average user with small steempower curation isn't one of my major concerns. I've never made a dollar from curation, neither has it led other users to my blog/page. For me it's just a passive means of earning sp I can easily forgo. I really don't understand all the technical aspects to this new model that is been proposed and I don't need to because it's the only reason many miss the fundamental issue, which is that this is a social media platform and what drives and has led to the success of some social platforms like Facebook is usability. People spend the entirety of their life and time on Facebook or Twitter without earning a dime, but here we claim to offer more than (earnings). Unfortunately, by offering more we've ignored the social aspect of social networking which should be the heart and soul of this ecosystem.

My take is, we should focus on the social aspects of the steem ecosystem not the earning aspect because the former has not led to any significant changes. We need to capture the minds of the masses, and we can only do that by creating an environment they can interact with and enjoy.

A huge part of steem's success is tied to the success of Dapps and SMTs. I do not necessarily share this optimism. Regardless of how we decentralise, the social aspect of blockchain must be factored, that is: how do we get more onboarders and how do we enhance their experience? And it will not all come down to earnings.

I think the discussion with curation rewards is along the lines of how do we encourage people to keep hold of their SP for voting, rather than delegate it to bid bots. At the moment it's so much more lucrative to delegate. If it was a bit more lucrative to upvote then more might do that and more consumers might be encouraged in. Most people aren't content producers, we could really do with an incentive for new users to hang around and consume.

Maybe the problem instead is are the bidbot. I still feel even with the purposed change those who own these bidbots will find a new way to gain even more from the system.

There will always be someone like that, won't there? That's life!
