Historical magpies

in Feathered Friends • 3 days ago

Been sooo long since I joined SMAP! I hope that in less than 2 months, I'll have added a ton of new bird photos to my portfolio - and hopefully, a alot of new species! But while that moment doesn't come... I guess magpies will deserve the spotlight!

Eurasian magpie - Pica pica

I call them historial magpies because I've seen them during my visit to the Acropoles, in Athens. There were quite a few of them, hoppin around.

There are a lot of trees and green spaces near the monuments, so likely even more feeding opportunities, together with whatever is left behind by the tourists.

Being such an intelligent bird, they can probably discover quickly where best to hang out; or they also like the Acropolis view, like I did! They surely didn't looked that scared of humans, although some refused to get their photo taken and simply turned their backs.

To compensate, others were incredibly friendly. One of them allowed me to come as close as just a couple of meters.

And she looked curious; likely, waiting to see if any treat would come her way. So she simply stood there, watching the human snapping photos.

Unfortunately, Greece didn't provide that many birdwatching opportunities. Hoping the next vacations will be quite different, and will want to share the end result! ;)

Great shots. Nice to see some magpies taking in history 😆 In the US there is a covid sometimes called a robber jay or camp robber because they are so agressive around humans. Flying down on picnic tables stealing food.

Some of the birds can be really feisty! I remember some kind of blackbird there in the US diving onto people's heads! :)

Hive Power Up Day - November 1st 2026

I found the magpies fascinating, although very noisy 😀
