History
In the XV century, Portuguese navigators had cosmographic knowledge that allowed navigation through the calculation of latitude and longitude.
However, with the explorations of discovery they were faced with new realities that they had to study and to which they had to adapt. Among these innovations are the discovery of the Magellanic galaxy and the publication in 1496 of the Almanach Perpetuum Celestium Motum, a constant work of declination tables by the royal astronomer Abraão Zacuto, which became essential, along with that of Pedro Nunes (mathematician in the service King Manuel I), for navigation.
Pedro Nunes played a fundamental role, since he conceived different instruments through the application of geometry and mathematics for navigation through the measurement of the height of the Sun, such as one that looked like a sundial and that was used by D.João de Castro, the Shadow Instrument, the Nautical Ring and the Nónio.
