Yesterday I was thinking about immortality and how cool it would be to no longer be afraid of death because you know you cannot die. But while I was thinking of it, I couldn't help but ask myself a “would you rather” question.
Would you rather live forever and watch everyone you've ever loved die, or would you rather be the first person to die and just not have to go through any of that pain?
Now that is a very difficult question, no matter how you think of it. I mean, I spent about fifteen minutes thinking about it yesterday, and no answer I came up with seemed good enough, and this is because no matter what you choose, one thing is constant at the end: pain.
Losing my mom was the first time I felt real pain caused by death, because this was the first time someone really close to me was dying. The pain was unbearable, and I won't lie to you; if I had my way, it is something I wouldn't want to experience with anyone else ever again in my life.
But I also don't want to die either, because not wanting to experience the death of a loved one only means one thing, and that is that I will have to die to not experience it. So sadly, what that means is that in the future, it probably would happen again. The pain, the tears, the sadness, the condolences, and all that.
It's not something we think about often, but just because we don't think about it doesn't mean it won't happen. But anyway, let's get back to the topic of discussion.
Immortality or die first?
Again, this isn't an easy option, but if I were to go for immortality, then I feel the only reasonable thing to do would be to disconnect myself from everyone, my family and loved ones. It definitely won't be easy, but I feel like the pain might be a lot less than living with them, creating memories, and then watching them die of old age when the time comes.
So maybe, disassociating from them and moving to a different country to start afresh all by yourself and making sure you don't get too attached to anyone ever again might be the best option if you end up choosing immortality. It is either that, or you stay with them and endure the pain, or you just decide to die first.
