ULOG 128 - Turmeric harvest & start of the BSF season

Harvesting the turmeric

Once again, I'm late for the harvest of the Turmeric and a lot of them have started sprouting already... Anyway, I was nicely surprise because the two root pouches have given such a good yield, I managed to almost fill up a 20 L bucket.

Harvesting Turmeric

To harvest the rhizomes, I first empty the root pouches one by one on a plastic sheet and collect the root and rub off the dirt.

You can see the tip of some of the rhizomes has a little white sprout. I can break or cut out a little piece with the sprout and put it into the soil to propagate.

Turmeric Rhizome sprouting

The bit on my forefinger is the "bulb" from which the plant comes out of the ground and is usually brown while the orange rhizomes are coming out off it like little fingers.

I filled a bit over 3/4 of a 20 L bucket with rhizomes and put the soil back into the root pouches.

After washing the rhizomes of most of the dirt I let them to dry a little bit on a table and put them back in the bucket. My wife will try to make some curcumin extract out of this but we won't get many from this quantity.

Beginning of the Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) season

Black Soldier Fly on a Mulberry leave

Today as I was gardening I noticed several Black Soldier Fly buzzing around and landing on the Lemon balm and Mulberry leaves. The warm week seemed to have helped a lot.

Hermetia illucens ovipositing

Here is a female ovipositing on the gap between the lid and the compost bin. Black Soldier Fly females only oviposit on dry surfaces adjacent to a food source as oppose to ovipositing directly on the food like common house flies.

I will sure make more posts and videos about this topic in the future.

It's so good to see how turmeric grows! Can it go anywhere like any root veggies or does it need special climate? You had a great harvest!

It definitely prefers warmer locations, it starts dying off in Autumn in NSW Australia and their roots can rot during winter if the soil is not draining enough. This year harvest was a nice surprise indeed.

Gosh seeing your turmeric harvest makes me want to move up north lol. We have had rain all night which is lovely and everything is going to grow like crazy now.

I hadn't seen fresh tumeric root dug up before, very nice. I do enjoy cooking with tumeric - feel good kind of food :)

What dishes do you prepare with turmeric?

You had a really nice harvest, good job! The plants obviously enjoyed themselves to grow so much and it is lovely. 💚

Thanks 😊
It’s a cycle, we care for them and they give us food and medicines.
