My mate once told me he bought a box that allows him to do slow cooking with no electricity or gas apart from the few initial minutes during which you bring the food to a boil. For the remaining hours the slow cooking pot is placed in that box that keeps the heat.
I did some research and found out that it is called a haybox because it was initially just a box filled with hay which is used as an insulating material. There are variations where you wrap the pot with a duvet, sleeping bag, you name it...
You can make it as simple or as complex as you wish. A simple haybox could be simply a large corrugated cardboard box filled with hay, coco coir, sugarcane mulch, shredded newspaper etc... and you would place your in the center.

As for me, I tend to always complicate my life and spend hours thinking of a design, measure once, cut twice and ending up with some odd results 🤣 but at least it is fun and I have something to blog about 😅
So I took my circular saw out of the box and started to cut a sheet of salvaged plywood to size. I used the pot's packaging box as model for cutting the plywood. This is when designing things in your head can be a problem when you don't have a lot of experience like me, but we'll come to that later on.
I used some wood glue to stick the boards together and used a couple of angle clamps to hold the first boards together and used some nails to secure them.
Because I never can cut straight, my boxes usually end up being narrower on one end or a bit crooked, so I use the partially built box to draw the shape of the next board so as to not have gaps due to the uneven cuts.
In the end, the box is completed and the pot fitted well inside. Well a little bit too well actually. Because I designed the thing in my head as I go, I often forget little things such as giving some margin rather than tight measurements. In this case, I didn't give enough space for my hands to get inside the box when holding the pot. I could use one or two fingers on the handles but when the pot is full it would be difficult. But it's not too bad, I still and use some mittens and hold the pot itself or use couple of hooks of some sort.
So what I just finished is the inner box of my haybox. The idea is I will be building a box inside of a box and fill the gap between the two boxes with some insulating material. On the photo above, you can see that I've placed my box on top of a larger sheet of plywood which will be the base of the larger outer box but this will be for part 2.

- Apart from the initial setup of your account, NEVER use your password ANYWHERE, if stolen, it will give full control to your Steem account.

This is brilliant. when I lived off grid, I used to simply get my heated food (brought to boil stew or soup) then wrap it in towels and blankets and leave it - worked a treat and saved on gas.
I could take this a step further and bring food to boil on the rocket stove 😄 but my new shiny pot will come out all black like coal 😰

Cool idea!
I use to have a solar oven that was an insulated box - black inside with a little rack in the middle to set your food on. It had large fan shaped reflectors on it that caught all the sun's rays and reflected it into the black box part. There was a plexiglass window in the front of the box.
Point it at the sun and it works like a charm easily getting the oven over 300 degrees.
Great for hot summer days when you don't want to heat up you house.
