Visiting the Australian Reptile Park in Somersby, NSW.

in #zoo5 years ago

We've been living on The Central Coast for several years now but Saturday was only very first time visiting the Australian Reptile Park. It was a warm sunny day and we wanted to do something different so I suggested visiting the park. The entrance fee is A$39 per adult and $21 per kid (discounts available, check their website).

The park is situated amongst the wood in Somersby not very far away from the waterfalls. As we stepped into the venue, it started feeling good and relaxing thanks to the surrounding nature.

We started our visit wit the "The Lost World of Reptiles". It was interesting to see all sorts of lizards and snakes. Some of them must definitely be feeling tight in their small enclosures but I guess, sadly, they are probably safer in a zoo than in their natural habitats and hopefully we are raising awareness with the next generations. Here are some shots taken with the iPhone.

As we got there around mid-day, our stomach was claiming food, so we headed to the on-site cafe and grabbed some lunch and had a little visitor coming say hello:

We missed Elvis' show but we saw him swimming around in his little pool. He's a big saltwater croc for sure! Anyone wanna get down and rub his back?

Our next visit were the Komodo Dragons, the Dingo, the bats followed by the Galapagos Tortoise. Hugo, the 68 year old tortoise was there but he was busy eating and was showing us his back all the time. But we got to see another giant tortoise (can't recall his name) also having his lunch.

We then went to the Spider World and spotted some weird insects looking like branches and leaves:

We also saw some interesting varieties of frogs in the Frog Hollow. It wasn't easy to take shots in the place as it was dark and there were reflections on glass

We ended up patting the Kangaroos sunbathing on the lawn and then had a walk in the wood.

Overall, we enjoyed the visit and believe it was worth paying the entry fee. The park has a nice ambiance and is great for a family day out and kids get to learn about animals in a very friendly environment. We did spend a lot of time talking to the animal keepers and asking questions about the animal each of them were taking care of. Near the end we got to pat and shake hands with a baby alligator, it was an amazing experience as I've never touched a gator until now.

I do like the zoos that educate and ignite passion like that :)

It’s also very cool that they do have some other events to get the community involved. One nice one is for big kids to spend the day at the zoo and learn how to care for the animals.

Ahh yeh I think our main zoo has a similar program as well, or at least had at one stage, I remember having a quick poke around to see if it was still available and if any of my kids wanted to do it.
