🦉 The great spotted woodpecker (Dendrocopos major)

  • Dendrocopos Greek: dendron tree, coptō to hit, beat
  • major (lat.) big

This woodpecker is easily recognized by its black and white plumage and red undertail, and males also have a red cap on their heads. And of course, they are numerous and can be easily found in any forest.

These woodpeckers are practically not afraid of people. For example, in parks, where they are already accustomed to seeing people, they can let you get within a couple of meters if you are busy looking for food or digging in a feeder. They feed not only on insects, but also on cone seeds. They specially arrange "forges" for this, where they clamp a cone in a crevice of a tree and peck out the seeds.
