They Stopped, For a While.

in The Ink Well6 years ago

They imagine even the earth feels sunburnt
all the hills unclothed, forests slung in piles of woodchips
the plains crack and warp and wish for night
valleys no longer dark, but exposed
It's not that they don't find the sun useful - they need it to survive

It's just
too
much.

In the heat, decay increases, bones bleach white
Everything is stretched and pulled and whirring
Cells shrink, mouths search for cool water
The ghost forests only give ghost shade - what good is that?
With borders shut virtual travelling just reminds them what is lost

When they're not spending hours hurtling along tarmac they notice more
They wonder - why did we do all those things?
That last white rhino, the Indian cheetah, a softshell turtle - all withered in the sunlight whilst they focussed on growth and market predictions
Now, they wonder at a mountain goats on Welsh streets
and a bearded vulture seen over the Severn Estuary - wildlife anomalys
Realised this sixth extinction threatens us, too
They feel a kind of queasiness that they believed themselves immune.

The factories don't truly shut though - supply lines remain open, largely.
Arterial highways with bloated trucks
Manufacturing barely ceases, though they feel a slight pinch -
Delayed Ebay orders from China and other inconveniences
Makes them think, though. For a moment.

They call this the Great Pause.

They do stop, for a while. She takes his hand.
They sit on the porch and notice the silence, the stars.
The new moon rises corpulent and rotund
Ready in the low sky.
Ask me! it whispers. Can we take the night? they reply
The sun is going down, as it's meant to.
They wish the sunrise not to come.

It is so quiet now, and cool, and soft.

With Love,

I don't know how I find out if I have nominations, but here goes.

@tipu nominate

Hi there? The apex of this piece came through in the opening verse, I didn't bother checking how themed it was because I was carried away by the imageries, the sense of sight and sense of touch, it was well written and I loved the diverse use of words and it didn't just touch a particular angle and I was taken away by the mastery. It made use of words that painted the right pictures. Well done

@josediccus Thank you soooo much - I really appreciate your comment, as I know you're a good writer yourself!

What do you mean 'didn't just touch a particular angle'?

What do you mean 'didn't just touch a particular angle'?

What I meant was that it didn't just rotate or appeal on a regular metric of poetic creativeness, somehow I fwltt oh "it was a prose poetry, somehow I felt oh it's a poem" that indecisiveness Makes it pure bliss.

as I know you're a good writer yourself!

Thanks a lot

Oh I see!!! That makes sense. Yes, it's more free verse, which I really enjoy writing. I'm so glad you enjoyed it. I felt it was exactly that - a kind of prose poetry, so I'm so glad you picked up on that!

I use to read your contents a lot too, it's more free write and then you have a way of writing long contents that are quite addictive and catchy but then I had to comment on this one because it was something I related with.

Thanks so much - I know you're a poetry fan, and poetry can be quicker and easier to read too. Glad you enjoyed it, and I liked yours today too!

I'm really feeling the sadness behind "for a while".

Some things have gone crazy stupid, like the bubble wrap industry - soooo much insane unsustainable packages. But we have seen Green Turtles come back to nest in Thailand.

I LOVE The Great Pause, despite the challenge of little money and the uncertianty of it all.

Thank you for penning some important and poignant thoughts.

Bloody bubble wrap! Yes, there are some insane things, and some blessings. I think we should make the pause a little longer...

Thanks so much for reading, and commenting. Poetry isn't everyone's cup of tea and I appreciate your engagement x

So beautiful, as always your words are so touching and so invoking of time on this earth.
I do think this time has really given people time to reflect, I just hope they chose to do that, because we have a lot to answer for and so much to be grateful for. No matter what we do, this natural wonder that we have the privilege of calling home, will always continue to be and create such glorious miracles each day.
I love your imaginary and yes we have caused a lot of damage, but their are also a lot of us working in harmony with the earth, listening to her, honouring her, we may be fewer, but we are connected and strong.
I feel your pain in this, it is linked to the pain we have inflicted, but we need to let it go so that we can be more productive. Movement, always movement is needed, a great change has begun and we both know what change we want so our power lies in helping to create that, in our own corners and sharing our love and our acknowledge of the pain so that it can now finally be laid to rest as it is released in the light. xxxx

Oh remember I'm not the subject in this post, though of course my pain is transmuted. I'm a bit more angry than the people in there - and a bit more aware before the fact. But yes, definitely have to simply let go and move into an active plan for future.... it's begun!!!! I feel like my subjects would wake up, shake themselves off, and get going on something important - I hope!

Thanks so much for your comment!

Beautiful. Simple words yet powerful expressions.

We call this style of poetry, Azad Shairi in Urdu, of course, free write in English.

Azad Shairi sounds beautiful to me. Thanks so much for your comment.
