In the city of Cumana, there is a space dedicated to skateboarding and BMX riding—an area within Ayacucho Park that has been set up for these purposes. It is a fairly secluded spot that serves as a paradise for skateboarders and young people who enjoy extreme sports. Here, I saw ramps of varying difficulty levels and other obstacles. This area borders the Manzanares River and offers visitors a sense of tranquility due to its location, hidden from the view of those traveling along Humboldt Avenue or simply passing through the park on their way to downtown.
Typically, these “urban tribes” gather between 4 p.m. and sunset to showcase their talents. You can witness some daring stunts—and, of course, spectacular falls—but everyone comes equipped with the necessary protective gear to prevent serious injury. More than just a physical activity, this sport represents a lifestyle, hence the distinctive clothing and symbols that identify them.
What’s interesting about this area is that a group of skaters actually managed to get the authorities to grant them a space, since they had previously been practicing right in the middle of the park, near the Ayacucho Museum, obstructing the free flow of people. They were then sent to this spot, behind an amusement park, but they also ran into problems because of the number of children playing in that area. Such was the persistence of these young people—they stood their ground despite the restrictions and police presence—that they achieved their goal of having their own space within the park.
Now you can see art displays; the murals are regularly updated, with graffiti artists leaving their mark on these walls, beautifying the space. There have been various artistic approaches over the past few years; previously, it was common to see a kind of mosaic, but now there is a mural that blends local historical references—such as the San Antonio de la Eminencia Castle and the Basilica of Santa Inés—with skateboarding and BMX culture.
Since I’m not really into skateboarding or doing tricks on wheels, I usually just stroll around here without any grand plans, simply enjoying the park before continuing on my way and perhaps reminiscing about my younger days with a touch of nostalgia.

En la ciudad de Cumaná existe un espacio para la práctica del skateboard y del bicicross, un lugar dentro del parque Ayacucho que ha sido acondicionado para estos fines. Es un sitio bastante retirado que constituye un paraíso para los patineteros y jóvenes que se dedican a los deportes extremos. Acá pude observar rampas con diferentes niveles de dificultad y otros obstáculos. Este espacio colinda con el Río Manzanares y ofrece quietud a los visitantes por su ubicación, escondido de las miradas de quienes transitan por la avenida Humboldt o simplemente pasan por el parque para ir al centro de la ciudad.
Por lo regular, estas "tribus urbanas" se reúnen en un horario comprendido entre las 4 de la tarde hasta que el sol se oculta para hacer gala de sus talentos. Se pueden observar algunas acrobacias arriesgadas, y por supuesto caídas aparatosas, pero todos acuden con el equipo de protección necesario para evitar daños de consideración. Más que una actividad física este deporte representa un estilo de vida, de allí las vestimentas que les identifica y también sus símbolos.
Lo interesante de esta área es que justamente un grupo de patinadores lograron que la autoridades les concedieran un espacio ya que anteriormente realizaban sus prácticas en pleno parque, cerca del Museo Ayacucho, obstaculizando el libre tránsito de las personas. Luego los enviaron a esta parte, detrás de un parque de diversiones mecánicas, pero también tuvieron problemas por la cantidad de niños que juegan en esa área. Fue tal la insistencia de estos jóvenes, se mantuvieron firmes a pesar de las restricciones y de la presencia policial, que lograron el objetivo de tener su propio espacio dentro del parque.
Ahora se pueden apreciar muestras de arte, los murales se renuevan con regularidad, donde los grafiteros dejan su huella en estas paredes, embelleciendo este espacio. Las propuestas estéticas han sido varias a lo largo de estos últimos años, previamente era común observar una especie de mosaicos, pero ahora se puede apreciar un mural donde se mezclan referencias históricas locales tales como el Castillo San Antonio de la Eminencia y la basílica de Santa Inés con la cultura del skate y del bicicross.
Si bien este espacio fue habilitado para la práctica de deportes extremos, durante gran parte del día permanece solitario debido a su ubicación, prácticamente está escondido, así que tal ambiente discreto también suele ser aprovechado por enamorados que pretenden mantenerse alejados de la atención pública y más en esta época cuando todo se puede saber en instantes.
Como no pertenezco al gremio de la patineta ni de las piruetas sobre ruedas, suelo caminar por acá sin muchas pretensiones solamente disfrutar del parque antes de proseguir mi camino y quizás recordar mis tiempos juveniles con cierta nostalgia.
