The Obispos Square in Cumana is an iconic site located on Santa Rosa Avenue; it pays tribute to Monsignor Sixto Sosa Díaz, who served as the city’s first bishop in 1923. Diagonally across from this square stands the Santa Rosa de Lima Church. Nearby are two local landmarks: the popular Radio 2000 station and The Copita building, home to numerous medical offices.
The bishop’s bust was vandalized, and currently only the pedestal remains. Here you can see several well-organized green spaces bordered by concrete edging. I noticed plastic containers being used as seedling trays, which will soon be transplanted, so this garden is growing.
There are huge, shady trees, including some almond trees bearing fruit. I also saw flowering plants such as marigolds, petunias, bellflowers, and coral flowers, as well as palm trees and coconut palms. This square is triangular in shape, and although it is small, it is very striking because of its varied vegetation.
On Sundays, there is a lot of traffic here due to the number of parishioners attending Mass. Right across the street is a mobile fruit stand, which is another landmark of this area. This plaza is very close to three others located in the same La Copita neighborhood, which is why it is referred to as the church plaza to distinguish it from the others.
Although there are no concrete benches, it is common to see residents bring their own chairs and sit in this square in the afternoons or during the frequent power outages. It is worth noting that while this space appeared abandoned for a time, it was revitalized by the community, as evidenced by the construction of planters made of stones—some painted green—and the aforementioned planting of ornamental plants.

La plaza Los Obispos de Cumaná es un sitio emblemático, queda ubicado en la Avenida Santa Rosa y rinde tributo a Monseñor Sixto Sosa Díaz, quien en 1923 fuera el primer obispo de la ciudad. En la diagonal de este lugar se encuentra la iglesia Santa Rosa de Lima. En sus adyacencias se encuentran dos referentes locales, la popular emisora Radio 2000 y el edificio La Copita, sede de numerosos consultorios médicos.
El busto del obispo fue vandalizado y actualmente solo se encuentra el pedestal. Acá se pueden apreciar diferentes áreas verdes muy organizadas que están delimitadas por un borde de concreto. Pude contemplar envases de plástico, a modo de germinadores, que próximamente serán trasplantados, así que este jardín va en crecimiento.
Se aprecian enormes árboles que dan sombra, entre ellos algunos almendrones con sus frutos. También observé plantas florales como Mirasol, Petunia, Campanita y Coralillo, además de palmas y cocoteros. Esta plaza tiene forma de triángulo y aunque es pequeña es muy llamativa por su variada vegetación.
Los días domingos hay mucho movimiento vehicular por acá debido a la cantidad de feligreses que acuden a la misa. Justo al frente se encuentra una frutería ambulante, que es otro punto referencial de este lugar. Esta plaza se encuentra muy cerca de otras tres que están ubicadas en la misma zona de La Copita, de allí que se le designe como la plaza de la iglesia con el objetivo de diferenciarla de las demás.
Aunque no posee bancos de concreto, es común observar a los vecinos transportar sus sillas y sentarse en esta plaza en las tardes o cuando ocurren los acostumbrados apagones. Es de resaltar que si bien durante un tiempo este espacio lució abandonado, fue rescatado por la comunidad ya que es evidente la construcción de jardineras utilizando piedras, algunas decoradas de color verde y la ya mencionada siembra de plantas ornamentales.
