INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND TOLERANCE

Now to our discussion for this weekend! We will be discussing "INDIVIDUAL DIFFERENCES AND TOLERANCE”.
Across different parts of the world, there have been increasing reports of harmless individuals facing discrimination, violence and sometimes death for existing and living their truth. These individuals are often targeted based on assumptions and prejudice from intolerant groups or those whose religious beliefs have been pushed to harmful extremes. This has raised important questions about human rights, safety, and accountability within communities and institutions. As these incidents continue to surface online, they call for deeper reflection on how we all respond to individual differences and the call for justice towards oppressed groups.

What role should the leadership of our educational institutions play in reducing stigma and preventing harmful mob actions against individuals whose sexualities are perceived to be different?

OR

How do you feel when cases of unjustifiable harm or killings, allegedly carried out by individuals who share your faith or belief system, surface online? Do you think such incidents should be handled quietly to avoid public attention, or should they be openly discussed with empathy and a strong focus on human rights, regardless of religious perspectives?

If you have a topic you would like us to discuss in our future hangouts, please feel free to suggest it to us in the comment section and tag @sam.hangout to it.

Okay Let's Gist!!!

Be as simple and sincere with the discussion, hehehe.

  1. Certain factors affects the development of a person apart from hereditary, it's the environment an individual has been exposed to right from childhood to adulthood. One wasn't born with a differing sexuallity, it is what the person has allowed himself or herself to be accustomed with just like been addicted to drugs.
I suggest that role of educational leadership involves :
  • Raising and providing a controlled or supervised environment especially hostel accomodations; if they are considering to accommodate people with different sexuality or there's a threat to life, They should offer them protection and security by enforcing rules and regulations with consequences. This will ward off any intending mob action and protect the individual involved.
  • Employing qualified and experienced guidance counselor and psychologist. They should be present in high schools; to help instill respected morals and checkmate deviations before it becomes an established lifestyle.
  • By conducting seminars on the effects of stigma while enforcing empathy, respect of human rights especially right to life and dignity of human person.
  • To provide a reliable and honest student affairs officer for thorough information collection and investigation and following up stated channels of communication for enforcement. Suggestion boxes, posters can be used too.
  • Having security personnel available to manage any stirring conflicts or commotion before it escalates.
Thank you and please tag me @sam.hangout for the next hangout

Love your contribution, especially about conducting seminars and having security personnels on standby to mitigate conflicts. However, I'll like to add that people are indeed born with different sexualities. It's rarely about the environment as opposed to what you think. Also, there is no need to separate them in hostels. Gay people do not cause harm to anyone. They are only attracted to people from the same gender, more or none. Same way married people like you are attracted to a different gender.

I wish you a happy Sunday.😊

I appreciate you for adding that, they are valid. The goal would be to establish a safe environment that mitigates conflict despite varied sexualities. Have a wonderful day

❤️❤️❤️

Happy weekend, guys! I know I'm late, but better late than never.

Response to Q1:
Honestly, this topic is a sensitive one because every year, we hear cases of people being killed either for their unconventional sexualities or political views in school. It's unfair because every one has a right to life and free speech, even though we frown against bigotry of any kind.

Even today, many people still think being gay or bi is such a bad thing that they would rather pick side with a thief. Many religious people will support a presidential candidate with the worst history simply because he kicks against
abortion rights. We might think the opinions we have on these things are just opinions just but it does contribute to the mob actions. The people who inflict harm feel justified because everyday you join them to speak very poorly or violently against those you perceive different. You also stigmatize them in your classes, neighbourhood and workspace. So, why won't the violent ones feel backed?

To help curb this, the leadership of every institution should be neutral, even if they have differing views on the personal lives or views of students. The rights of every one under their care should be protected, with assigned staff who will ensure that the rules and regulations regarding this are being respected. Most importantly, the leaders should be accountable. Always. Silence in the face of injustice is an answer. If they don't release any memo whenever a student becomes a victim of violence due to their sexuality or harmless views, it means they are siding with the oppressors and everyone should treat it as such.

  1. When harm is done by people who share your faith

This is uncomfortable for anyone with strong beliefs. Two common reactions show up:

Reaction 1: Shame and defensiveness
It hurts to see someone use your faith to justify violence. The first instinct might be to distance yourself — “they’re not real members” — or worry that speaking up will make your whole religion look bad. That’s human. But silence can look like approval to outsiders and to victims.

Reaction 2: Moral clarity
Many people of faith believe that justice and compassion are core to their belief system. So when harm happens, they feel a duty to condemn it publicly. The logic: if your faith values life, then defending life isn’t anti-religion. It’s being faithful to the best of it.

Should it be handled quietly or discussed openly?
Handling it quietly protects institutions, not people. When violence is hidden, it usually repeats. Open discussion with empathy does three things:

  1. It validates the victims— they see that not everyone agrees with the harm done to them.
  2. It forces accountability — leaders and communities have to state clearly that violence isn’t acceptable.
  3. It educates your own group— many people follow harmful extremes because no one they respect ever challenged those ideas.

Human rights aren’t a religious issue. They’re a human issue. The right to not be killed for existing shouldn’t depend on whether your community approves of you. If we only defend rights for people we agree with, then we don’t actually believe in rights. We believe in privilege.

So yes, it should be discussed openly. But “openly” doesn’t mean disrespectfully. It means: name the harm, center the victims, affirm that no belief justifies violence, and commit to preventing it.

Yes I totally agree with you that when harm is done by people who share our faith or beliefs, it should not be hidden or ignored. It should be discussed openly with respect and strong focus on human rights and justice.

Sure that is how it supposed to be, addressed openly for clarity and admonition. Thanks for commenting. Have a splendid night.

Do you think such incidents should be handled quietly to avoid public attention, or should they be openly discussed with empathy and a strong focus on human rights, regardless of religious perspectives?

Hmm, sincerely always feel bad whenever such incidents surfaces, because these are people that are suppose to preach the gospel not to against them , I feel that whenever such things happens, they should always be a way to tell the public on decisions to be taken and result to killings of harmful behaviour, because many life have been lost in this manner.
Religion shouldn't be what people now hold to commit deadly crimes, because I'm sure there's no where in the bible or quran that supports such.

In all I believe we all should keep our for eachother and as the bible says love your neighbour as yourself then if they follow this , they wouldn't want to commit such.

If there's love, we won't be having this issues.
We really need to let love lead .
Nice point.

We need to actually.
Vanny Baby ... Welcome

Love is just the ultimate but is it possible in our world today when brother hunt fellow brother ?

My dear, we are all imperfect humans, regardless of our ranks or status. So people must commit crime but the manner in which it is handled is what will actually put a stop to it or let it continue ❤️.

hello naija brothers and sisters, happy weekend...

it's an interesting topic of discussion, i feel this really focuses more on us as a people with multi cultural and ethnicities living as one. this is why i am proudly NIGERIA cause no country of the world can survive what we survive and still remain normal ...

currently people can't seem to travel freely to let say the northern part of the Country without holding thier heart in their hands, it's never supposr to be so, it's not a todays thing, it's been happening for years,

now I'm not trying to speak up because it's a crime committed by another tribe, it's totally uncalled for, why kill innocent people, why harm them, what wrong did they do, sometimes i think all this is just politically motivated, that's why those sponsoring them will later call them out all in the name of amnesty, then recycle.them back or continue breeding new ones

there shouldn't be any form of covering things up weather or not who commits it is from my religion. they must face the wrat of the law ....

just giving my shout out to
@afriken
@marsdave
@merit.ahama
@justfavour
@samostically

You're right about this sir...
We shouldn't sweep this things under the carpet all because the perpetrators are of a particular religion or tribe that's ours too..
They should be dealt with...

Apparently without mincing words and with no sentiments, I've actually not heard about a mob of people who share same faith as mine killing people and at least this causes some kind of ease that it's of peace truly.

To me, these kind of cases are sensitive in such a way that, quietly sorting it make the rest of the squad wanna strike more because they feel like the ones that were caught went at ease or were even pardoned by the government as surrendered terrorists but when public severe actions are taken, making the ones who are caught face the wrath of the law then others who are still in hiding would think twice before terrorizing people.

But then, we know that even the supposed governments are the ones behind this whole calamities.

I'm coming jare. I want to go and drink small water

Well, after a stressful week, I'm having a busy weekend as well.
I've been busy writing notes and studying ahead of next week, cos my students are now improving and I can't afford to not answer whatever questions they throw at me and also explain the various subjects we've treated the most understandable way....
So, aside that I cook, ate, made a post and took my bath... I've been studying.

When you say individuals whose sexualities are perceived to be different, you are simply using a careful and euphemistic expression to refer to gay, lesbian, bisexual, and often transgender (or gender non-conforming) individuals, right?

Now, having said that here is my response to both questions.

Mob violence and jungle justice are barbaric, evil, and completely unacceptable, no matter who the victim is.Whether it is Deborah Samuel in Sokoto, the Aluu Four in Port Harcourt, or individuals accused of homosexuality, no human being deserves to be tortured, beaten, or burned alive by a mob. This lawlessness must stop.

On the role of educational institutions:
School leaders should teach students to reject mob action and uphold the rule of law. They must clearly educate young people that even when we strongly disagree with certain behaviors, including same-sex acts which are criminalized under Nigerian law, no one has the right to take the law into their own hands.
However, educational institutions should not be used to push ideologies that contradict our religious beliefs, cultural values, and national laws under the guise of reducing stigma.

On killings carried out by people who share same faith:
Such acts bring deep sadness, shame, and righteous anger. When people claiming to act in the name of religion commit unjust harm or murder, these cases should not be swept under the carpet or handled quietly. They must be openly discussed, investigated, and strongly condemned by religious leaders.True faith demands justice, mercy, and respect for human life, not cover-ups or excuses for jungle justice.

My final position:
Nigeria must firmly fight all forms of mob violence and extrajudicial killings while maintaining our sovereign right to uphold our laws and moral standards on sexuality. The solution is stronger institutions, proper enforcement of the law through due process, and honest moral education.Thank you.

At the moment, I can say I am a teacher, and with the little I've seen, I can say these students are learning not just from the textbooks, but are also learning from us who they see as their leaders. Because as teachers that we are, we can call ourselves leaders too since they look up to us. That's why we just make sure to not just teach but show respect, love, tolerance and all.... We shouldn't overlook some of these things that students do all in the name of being prefects, seniors or a bigger student. We should correct them when they are wrong, or else they grow into become a bully. And that is why I would always talk about having a counselor in school, a lot of students have become isolated and they don't find it easy, they were supposed to be learning and feel comfortable, but then they are here learning in fear. Just like what I told my principal at the beginning of this term, "we need a counselor." Well, they keep saying they will work on it, hopefully they will before things get out of hand. Recently, I heard of a school around my area here where a student was talked down, mocked and bullied by his fellow students all because of his sexuality and all.. if teachers in that school let go of such, believe me it will grow into a mob-like behavior that they might not be able to contain later...

So, leaders must be at alert always and be ready to step in every single time, and discipline those who are involved just so to curb such behaviors. That's why a school should have a counselor, a disciplinary committee and such.

We all know religion is supposed to preach love, peace and harmony. I personally believe that any religion that's against those shouldn't be considered as a religion. So, it feels somehow when we see killings and all being done by individuals that we believe and know to share same faith with us... And when such is done and seen, we shouldn't keep quiet about it, they can't claim they are doing it for God and you who are of the same religion as them knows its wrong and that is a lie, but still decide to keep mute. The more we keep quiet, the more rampant it becomes, and in no time it will gain grounds and go beyond what we can contain/control. In short, faith isn't a cover up for evil and it shouldn't be used to cover up evil deeds and violent acts.

Takeneeeed already

Good 👍

I have also realized that kids learn from people around them.

You made a good point, leaders should live by example, show kindness and love, because these kids are watching.

Thanks for sharing.

You gerrit Mama 😊

Good morning, my love. Being a teacher is not easy; students can be a handful, and knowing when to tolerate them and when to correct them is the best gift a teacher can have.

I love how you love children, and I find it difficult to tolerate them sometimes, but what can we do? They're beautiful gifts from God.

Smiles, abi naw.
We just have to find a way around things and give corrections the best way...

Leadership must first acknowledged the problem exists. I once watched this movie released by Linda Ikeji where there or four students were attacked by mob, beaten and burned alive because of something they didn't do. Still, the police and even the school administrators never talked about the jungle justice of a thing that was done, regardless of what caused it.

In my opinion, if our leaders, I mean school leadership want to really do better. They should start by taking this mob of a thing seriously just like they take other things seriously. They should release a memo or rules that there will always be a capital punishment for any student that engaged in the mob activity because it is an act of violence that deserves not to be taken with a careless hand.

All schools, or majority of schools have Student Unions for a reason, they have hostels porters for a reason some even have guards. These people should be trained because they are likely to be the first responder in such situation. They have much information at hand and who to talk in such situation. And just like anonymous TV that some people usually do, the school authority should also have eyes in all corners of the school that will be reporting how things are going most especially if things want to go south.

I don't want to talk about that religion aspect because it's so tiring when I see some religious people being killed by people of other religions faith and yet, nothing is being done....

The major problem faced by the world today is injustice and our leaders are making it worst because it seems they're just comfortable about it.
Making us feel they are even the cause of this the happening, sorry to say.

People have disgraced their faith by engaging in actions that spoils the image of the faith they portray.
I don't think there is any genuine faith that will support its member being unjust to one another, treating others as though they aren't human.

In this regard, I think if such thing should happened in the faith where I'm privileged to lead, I will not only punished you secretly.
I will make the world know we aren't a party to what you did.
Cause, every bad actions, people will always trace back to the faith that person belong.

Regardless of their title or position, leaders should not spare anyone of such acts as will be create a society where people are rest assured they have a leader who can stand up for them

I think discriminating or inflicting harm on someone just because they are different or share different views should be publicly frowned at, especially by the institutions and those in authority.

Tolerance is always crucial for our peaceful coexistence. Not everyone is the same, and that's not a bad thing.

What role should the leadership of our educational institutions play in reducing stigma and preventing harmful mob actions against individuals whose sexualities are perceived to be different?

Answer

Knowledge is power. The more we learn, the more we do the right thing. Harmful Mob actions often times is caused by ignorance and wrong programming from teachings.

To stop this, our educational and religious leaders should teach the need for love, empathy, and embracing diversity in a different approach.

Happy Sunday my people

I attended service today and I learned more about the work of holy Spirit input lives as Christians

Currently at ShopRite ..having a nice time with my people this Sunday evening 😍

Happy Sunday, guys!🥰 I'm sure everyone probably knows I don't attend church on Sundays. But I've been helping to prepare okro soup at home while also taking breaks to chat with some friends.

I'm not a fan of okro, but today where I feel like eating solid food and there's just one, I've learned that sometimes you have to settle with what's available. I'll eat that today, because I know the rest of the week has better to offer me. I'm also going to see a movie in about two hours. Can't wait!

@zali.bee @marsdave @daverick How are you spending your Sunday?

Well I'm not a Christian so i didn't go to church.
After the house chores we waited until 11am hoping shopes should start opening in our street but unfortunately people were not back from church.

And i was craving for efo riro (vegetables) and semo.
So i refuse to give up o.... Na who give up mess up. i decided to go to a mini market far from my house (2k to and fro). Don't judge me o as i woke up i told myself is either semo and vegetables or nothing.

To cut the story short i prepared it, eat it like a hungry lion, i had a cold bath and slept. The heat wanted to fight a losed battle because my rechargeable wireless fan, 3000mAh no dey dissapoint.
So i had a good day.

2k to and fro in this economy, and you said I shouldn't judge you, ehn fine girl?😔 Anyways, I forgive you because you sound recharged and ready for the week. Haha. Sorry about the inconvenience that led you to the market tho. I hope that soup is still remaining for us tomorrow o.

Hmmm see my sister you will not understand throughout the time i was receiving treatment i couldn't eat anything. Just junks and i dey on red carpet like this and now that my body is finally requesting for food i said i will sacrifice it.

My uncle was shouting too until i finished cooking and dished everybody food dey all rushed it like hungry lions too 😅😅😅😅 And kept saying ahh it was worth the risk. Now my eye don clear, blood charged.

Haha. I feel you. Pele, dear. And what's red carpet?😅 Plainly call it out as period or menstrual flow. There's no shame in it.

I'm glad you all enjoyed the meal. Well done.

Na for sam hangout i learn that slang o.

And you nor remain the vegetables for somebody. No invite sef. Is that how you use to do? Ehnn 😒

😏😏 abeg who talk now now.
Like who is the intruder?
No push word for my mouth o i go bite you for ear.😅😅

You go soon know.
Na my house be dis.😏
Ishh, my ears are made of steel.😅

Who give you land.
We shall see about that let me catch you first

I'm not a fan of okro too 🥹

You that I saw the other day destroying Fufu and okro

You are beginning to see unusual things 😅

No, it's the usual thing 🙂‍↕️

Oh, finally!😭 Twinsssss.

Next time, try and invite me. I don't usually eat much

Coming from a devourer.

Have you seen me eat before?

Omo eh, ntn dey this Sunday o.
Service been showing me shege since, but yesterday and today own con worse pass 😕😞😕
It is well with my soul 😌

And the movies... let's see it together 🫣

I'm so sorry, bro. I hope they will let you see road soon o. Come and watch with me o, there's space.

Hopefully, cos he tire me 😕

I don't know oo..like u don't attend church on Sunday ? Is it a personal reason? I am interested 😍

Happy sunday, mama.🥰 I don't attend on Sundays because I'm a seventh day adventist. We worship on Saturdays.

Oh..I get it now🥰

Yes, mama. I trust you went to church o.😅

Of course I did 😀

Me I don't know oo. But now I know.😄

My Sunday was fine. Went to church, came back and have been home all through doing one or two stuff. I go watch football match later.

About the okro soup, is it remaining? Economy hard. I'll eat anything I see.🙂

Haha. Come and take o, e full pot. I hope they didn't flog you people today on the pitch?

Oya na. Tankyu. Let me get fufu sef. Nahh, we're currently beating the boys.

happy sunday ladies and gentlemen

Happy Sunday, lovely people.
Today's service was an interesting and reviving one because I learned something great on how I as a Christian can growing more and more in Christ's likeness.

Happy Sunday everyone.
The program went well, I can't dance but I enjoyed the praise and worship session.

Also, it was prayer all through today.
