A few days back, I was part of a particular online discussion about money and a topic was raised: "would you still continue with your daily job with the same zeal and enthusiasm if you are not paid for it or if money is not involved?" To my surprise, almost everyone was quick to say that they will ditch the job and look for another one. This made me to understand that "money" or any other remuneration is one of the fundamental motivators for engaging in any form of work. Yes, even to go into business, the first thing to consider is the profit involved in it. This is why, in this episode of Financial Tips, we shall be looking at how to be motivated by money. In other words, using money as a form of motivation.
1. Be specific with your goals
Without having any financial goal at hand, there will be absolute nothing to motivate you to work. It is when you have set a goal of what you want to achieve and how you want to achieve it that will prompt you to rise and engage your hands to work. Some people take up more than one job to do and when you ask them, you will be surprised that the major reason is to be able to fulfil a particular financial task, an obligation, or to pay some bills, but whatever reason it is, it motivates them to work. Your financial goals need to be specific so as to give you the required oomph to work. For example, instead of saying "I'll save something every month of this year". It will make sense to say "I'll save this percentage, or this amount for every month of this year". When you attach specifics to your financial goals, it will give you the required driving force.
I remember a particular place I worked before. They had allowances for weekend duties and overtime. Because of this, everyone would be happy to be selected for weekend duties. As a matter of fact, some people even go begging and lobbying to get weekend placements. The reason was very simple - weekend duty means more money and that alone has motivated them to do the work.
However, one thing to note is that when you are setting your financial goals, you have to put a few things into consideration. The truth is that when you set an outrightly impossible financial goal, instead of being motivated by it, you will rather be discouraged and it will become counterproductive. So you see, it is true that the idea of making money can be an instrument of motivation to someone, but it should be wielded rightly to achieve the right result.
2. Remove negative thoughts about money
It is saddening that some people attach some not-so-good thoughts to money and this has limited them from making the actual money. A friend was discussing with me a few weeks back about how bad his debt has become and he made a statement that he is not sure he will ever come out of the debt. In his mind, he has already concluded that he cannot live about the value of the current debt. So tell me, with this type of mindset, how will be person gather the zeal to work to make money to pay the debt since he has already invalidated his motivation?
Some people are indirectly setting themselves up for a major financial fall simply because of their thoughts towards money. There are some people that, when they see a wealthy person (especially if the person is young), they will already conclude that the wealth was not gotten in a healthy way. To them, they do not think that someone can be wealthy in a fair and legal means without getting their hands soiled. And this has also limited them from making money because they do not think they can.
Sometimes, people just need to change their perception and perspective about money and begin to think positively about it. Remember that what you like, you will most likely attract but you will naturally repel what you think negatively of. This is why you need to be positively inclined about your finances and you will have the motivation to keep you towards becoming better financially.
