Do you know how ethical principles are developed? Lawrence Kohlberg explains it to you in his theory on moral development (Part I)

in #votovzla7 years ago (edited)

Hello dear reader, today I leave this topic on moral development. I hope you like it, as well as my writing it.

The study of the moral development of the child has been continuously linked to debates and research, on which theories have arisen. At some point we have wondered about what is not right or about what is right. It has been these paths that have encouraged us to study aspects related to evil, good, morals and ethics; but fundamentally what we think about these concepts and how we translate them into daily life, into our routine events.

Before starting this topic it is appropriate to refresh two fundamental concepts. Namely:

What is ethical?

Ethics is a branch of philosophy dedicated to moral issues. The word ethics comes from the Latin ethĭcus, and this from the ancient Greek ἠθικός (êthicos), derived from êthos, meaning 'character' or 'belonging to the character.

What is moral?

Morality is a set of norms, values and beliefs existing and accepted in a society that serve as a model of behavior and assessment to establish what is right or wrong.

On the definitions and concepts of the recently mentioned terms, the philosophers have been given the task of entering into the field of hypothesis and explanatory theories; but the terrain that we are going to travel today is that of psychology, where Lawrence Kohlber's theory stands out.

But, who was L. Kohlberg?

He was a psychologist born in the United States in 1927. He worked for a long time at Harvard University during the second half of the 20th century.

His studies focused on the way people build their reasoning around morality.

Instead of dedicating himself to the study of the inappropriate or the appropriate, he worked in a different way, he studied the rules and norms that from the thought of the people were relative to the moral judgments.

Kohlberg was not the only one who developed bases for the study of morality; Jean Piaget managed to develop interesting theories on this aspect.

And who was Jean Piaget?

He was a constructivist psychologist, born in Switzerland in 1896. He conducted important research on the cognitive development of the child. His studies have had a determining influence on modern pedagogy and evolutionary psychology.

Kohlberg was a disciple of Piaget, let's talk about his theory about moral development.

His studies culminated in the proposal of his theory on moral development, which is influenced by the four phases of Piaget's development. Like this one, Kohlberg proposed the evolution by stages whose main characteristic is that they are qualitatively different from each other, being the curiosity the fundamental motor of the mental development of the successive stages of the development of the child.

These authors had an idea that united their proposals: the child's thinking goes from the development of mental processes centered on the concrete (one can see and touch), in an important way, to the most general and abstract.

In early childhood we think about the things we can see and touch directly, that is, we think in real time. Then, as we develop, we learn to reason about elements that we do not have in our present perceptual field.

Lawrence Kohlberg, leads this theory, which is part of Piaget's studies, until demonstrating, in the field of moral development, that it is entirely possible that we wish well-being even to people who are not by our side and even to those who We do not know yet.

Ethical thinking is becoming more inclusive, more extensive. It should be noted that extensiveness really is not what matters; but the qualitative changes that occur in the child as the development of the ethical circle becomes more extensive and inclusive.

Up to here, dear friends, this I Party. We'll see you soon ...
