Follow Friday: Game over?

The News

On my new PC I was having some issues running the Python script I have used to fetch prices from @coingecko to create a chart. I finally managed that today after some searching around for ideas. $HIVE continues to hover around 6c, but keeps getting us excited when it looks like going up. It seems the markets still lack confidence in it if they have even heard of it. As has been discussed recently they may be confused by the name.

Prices from @coingecko

As of today @risingstargame has been shut down, but there are plans to revive it. @wagginston is working on this, but we have to be patient. It needs converting away from the obscure programming platform used previously. User accounts have been saved and I would assume that the blockchain transactions have all the necessary history. This is one of the big advantages of a blockchain in that you do not depend on some central store of data.

Friday Follows

  • @friendlymoose created a Hive account health dashboard that gives you an overview of what an account has been up to. You can see how active they are and if they are good community members.
  • @zusi78 used that dashboard to check on some accounts that seemed to be offering airdrops. We should always be suspicious of such things. You have to decide who to trust and trust needs to be earned.
  • On the Rising Star front, @thehive had some thoughts on whether the game needs limits. This followed a somewhat heated discussion in the Discord. Getting the economics of a game right is tricky as you want to avoid too much inflation that devalues the rewards. I am sure the new team will look into this.
  • @livinguktaiwan and @revisesociology have been posting updates on their gardens. I may do this too. It is interesting to see what others are up to. They are both in the UK so may be comparable to my garden, but we have gardeners from around the world on Hive.
  • @dannewton has been out with his moth trap again and had much more success this time.

The Dog House

I mentioned last week that certain people accused me of conspiring against them and being in league with downvoters, but that is still not true. You will find no evidence as it never happened. Maybe someone I upset is telling lies about me, but I always try to be honest online as lies can come back to haunt you. I have been public about dealing with abuse years ago, but I have always tried to act for the good of the community. Others will still act on what they consider to be abuse, but that is a personal choice.

Like many I joined the original social blockchain in hope of earning something, but I really do not worry too much about that these days given the current price. I think we have value in a platform that is not controlled by huge corporations. Anyone is free to build on it and so we get cool games and applications. Maybe those can attract some new users and we need to make them welcome.

Of course I am disappointed that Hive is not much bigger, but there are so many other things trying to grab attention. That is why I am disappointed when good people decide to leave and I have seen that many times. Sometimes it is because they consider that others have been unfairly treated. I am not a big fan of downvotes as a blunt weapon, but how people react to them can make it worse. I would prefer talking to resolve differences, but then I am not into confrontation. I have been called a fool for that more than once!

Hive is a rigged system in that a few people have a lot of power, but I think most of them try to use it responsibly as that is in their interest. If it could grow to many more users who build their HP then the power balance will shift, but as things stand you will not get far if you go around upsetting people. Hive is very small and troublemakers stand out. Growth will bring fresh challenges.

The End

I need to look into getting my #BritList script working for next weekend once we are into June(!). I have to hope that the numbers can increase. I am happy to help others start building their own local lists. I do these things for fun and to help the community. I do not expect to get paid at all.

Have a great weekend and Hive five!

The man behind: @tenkminnows: Helping good Hivers level up

@proofofbrian: A bot that checks for tag typos

Seeing the legacy coin following Hive trends so tightly is quite scary. The very same people keep trading both coins, apparently.

You do wonder why they bother with the other one. It needs to be dumped from exchanges.

As of today @risingstargame has been shut down, but there are plans to revive it.

Sad days indeed, can any blockchain game survive? Everyone wants money..

With the current $HIVE price the economics will be tricky if you have costs to cover, let alone actually making money. He's done well to keep it running so long, but it looks like it will come back. A lot of Hive projects are done for fun.

Guess whose back this June ;)

Hey! Good to see you again. Hope all is good with you. You may find some new fun things around Hive. Of course I highlight them in these posts. It's a shame about Rising Star, but I hope it will be back fairly soon.

!PIZZA

comme ci, comme ça :)
professional and personal life have both been in an upheaval, so I've been busy with that. Personal life- anything dramatic, just elders not doing well, and other caregiving activities. Professionally, well, that has been more interesting. Now in an AI startup searching for design partners :D This old dog is learning new tricks it seems :)

I am back, thanks to you. I was speaking with Martin on Twitter, and we both remembered how disciplined you are with the activities you pick up. Which reminded me that I have not tried logging into Hive in a while. And here I am :)

I've not really got into the AI stuff, but I probably ought to. Retirement is not so far away and I have to decide how much new stuff to take on for work.

I gave up Twtr a while back, but have spoken to Martin now and then. Not seen him on Hive in a while. I'm thinking of going to the next Hivefest in Barcelona to meet up with some friends.

I could do some gardening posts but it’s my wife who deserves the credit mostly! Our garden is tiny, has its issues but could be a worthy journal, so that you can all find out what not to do lol!

Go for it. This whole blogging thing should be about sharing joy.

Very true!

Sad to see a game close, but if it's not sustainable.... But hopefully they will be back

Times are tough on Hive and people have to decide what's right for them.

My garden would be a pretty sad post if I did one! I haven't been taking very good care of it this year!

We've been working on ours. It does pay off,

This was a shock to read "@risingstargame has been shut down". I haven't played the game for, I think, one year now. I did play for a few days a couple of months back. Still, I never thought this day would ever come I'll be hearing these words, even if the shutdown is temporary.

It's not easy in the current situation, but we should be grateful that it kept going so long.

Do you know about what are the plans of the reset of risingstars?

If you read their post there are plans...

I'll take a look, thanks. A friend also told me about it, but haven't checked it yet.

Do you think this shut down will impact community support for Hive?

'shit down'? What do you mean?

Sorry, shut down

Of Rising Star? It's just one game and I hope it comes back. People will use other things on Hive anyway.

Update: @steevc, I paid out 15.409 HIVE and 0.000 HBD to reward 10 comments in this discussion thread.
