How do you feel when the post you have been working on disappears?

in Ask the Hive5 years ago

I have spent almost the last two hours working on a post and then the screen went wight and then - poof, just like that, it was gone - it Keyser Soze'd and disappeared on me. I was working on Peakd where the draft is usually saved, but the disappearing act has happened a couple of times now and I am wondering if anyone else has had this happen and then - what's the feels?

Hive bee.png

This used to be a common occurrence back in the day and is why I moved my writing in Wordpress, where I ended up drafting thousands of posts, many of which are still sitting there unfinished. While frustrating to lose a couple hours work, it is all part of the digital territory, though I remember people getting very upset at these kinds of events, as if the bug or whatever caused it was a personal and targeted attack on them.

Technology is the animal it is and it can be a little unpredictable at times - but I think that we have come to rely so heavily on it and have become so accustomed to it being always available that we have forgotten what it is like to have to wait for something. With instant messaging, on-demand programming, 24-hour shopping, next-day delivery and information pouring in from all around the globe and into our eyeline as it happens - we no longer have to be patient for anything, no longer need to wait in anticipation. It is no wonder that when something negative happens, we are so quick to anger - no matter how slight the issue may be.

Lost words aren't the end of the world.

So you're saying the screen went White? Do you happen to have a screenshot to help @asgarth understand. Meaning the text was gone but all the controls were there or something different than that?

You were still working on the post and hand't tried to post it yet right?
And when it went white... you went to drafts and it wasn't there?

If all content in a post gets deleted then we will safe the draft with your new desired blank post... so that's one thing you have to be careful of...

Are you saying your web browser deleted everything in your post? Per chance?
What web browser you using?

  • Brave Browser
  • the browser tab screen went white, not the whole screen, all other tabs were working
  • Still working on it, hadn't posted posted yet
  • After I tried to duplicate the tab, go back (thinking I had done something)
  • Finally refresh, which brought up an empty draft screen
  • No screen shots unfortunately

Hi, which login method do you use? Also draft are usually saved every 20-30 seconds ...so it's really strange that there is no draft if you have worked on it for some time. Can you give me the time? How many hours ago? Or the UTC time?

close to 2045 UTC (1145 Finnish time - 11 hours ago)

Not sure what happened with the autosave - Peaklock - I think on that PC :D

I cannot find any trace of this draft ...I see the draft (PUBLISHED now) of this post, but not the other one. So my best bet is that for some reason you have been logged out.

I'll add a warning when there is an error initializing the new draft so at least the user is aware of this.

it was strange, as I didn't have to log in to post this one, which was posted not too long after. But yep, I wouldn't mind having a warning in the draft that the user is logged out and it won't save.

Do you remind if you have included a title? Or if you just worked on the body of the post/draft?

I'm an habitual copier (ctrl-c). The longer my writing gets, the more often I hit ctrl-c. And if it's long enough I'll save it to a text file in case the computer crashes and wipes my ctrl-c.

I have gotten soft, complacent. It is much like after living for 17 years in Finland, I would be bitten by a spider, a snake and eaten by a crocodile on my first day back - I have lost the fear of death behind every corner.... :D

Ah! What a disappointment.

I was working on the "Harbor" post two days ago, as I had an SEO template from @abh12345 and carefully entered the heading, the photos and the body, all in the templet brackets.

So, I go down chuffed that it's done, to the tags. Entered the first tag and "POOF" 3 hours of work was taken to that place where the socks and the pens go. I think all of the missing spoons also go there.

Nothing in the drafts and nowhere to be found.

So, dejected I contacted Asher and told him that I would do my next post, yesterday, the "Charity" post, in the SEO style which I did. Apart from a minor correction he was happy with it and so was I.

Sadly it was a charity post and it will never make "Trending", but it's a great story anyway.

What a bummer!

It happens and I think that it might be "character building" , but I have enough character for now :D

I think that in time and with price, charity support will increase. I know that at the higher value ends on Steem it was quite a popular area.

Yes my character filled friend, Steem was good for us to keep on building up, but then they hung the washing out.

I have never before powered down, but it was now brought upon us in Steem.
Our second power down in Hive is also due tomorrow, then I will stop the Hive power down.
Will have to start building again and Hodl.

At least we will get some funds to tide the projects over for a while, but I think that things are going to get much worse before they get any better.
People are being laid of all over the place here.

There are a few guys at the top in Hive that support us now and again, which shows that you are right. In time everything will settle and work itself out.

It happened to me too a while back when I was working on an article that was already 2000+ words long! It was so awful because I spent half of my day working on it, editing the picture, playing with the coding behind the post so it's easier to be read... but I just took a break and then started all over again.

That sucks, but perhaps you got to make it even better!

I hope so! Haha. But everything happens for a reason, for sure!

That's pretty unfortunate, mate. I too get very upset when technology fails me, since I've accustomed to this thinking that it could never fail, that technology will work just fine, especially when it comes to simple things. But what I often forget is how complex everything is, and how much all that intricacy is hidden away, behind a pretty user interface, seemingly telling you that everything in this digital world is perfect.

Do you always write drafts on Peakd directly? Normally, I'd use OneNote to create drafts, and keep on editing until the finished post before I copy, and paste it onto Peakd. If anything happens, it'll still be on my computer, and saved on the cloud. One odd thing, is that copy+paste directly would show up as a screenshot of OneNote on Peakd's editor. The good old Windows Notepad comes in handy as a middle-man, maybe it has something to do with the format.

Hope it gets fixed, and you'll get your draft back :-)

Complexity is the downfall of us all - that and relying on convenience :D

Do you always write drafts on Peakd directly?

Lately I have been, but I used to draft in wordpress most often - as originally, there was no way to save long-term on Steem.

Ah, I see. I've never come across the Wordpress interface before, so I won't know how that works. I hope there'll be a fix for this soon, though. I can attest to the fact that complexity and convenience don't always work well :-)

I used WordPress for a business site and it allowed for drafting there.

It happened once to me. I was furious for one second than I calmed myself trying to re-remember everything and write it down again asap.

My memory is shocking - I wish I could remember a short shopping list...

Use notepad++. Even if you don't save, new docs get backed up and restored when opened again ;)

Haven't heard of it - will have a look.

Notepad++ is great. Use Simplenote if you want cross-device syncing.

Oh my God. I can imagine how that felt. So sorry about that @tarazkp. I'll suggest you type your work on the posting section of steemit.com or hive.blog. Even if you type it and swipe a million times, your work will still be saved. I hope other sites can upgrade to that level. So sorry once again for the loss.

Steemit.com used to eat posts back in the day. The save draft feature is normally pretty good in Peakd and I have been trying to use it more over the last few months - I don't write on a phone normally.

Oh.... Okay...

I use my phone for all my work even though it hasn't been so easy. But I still get to keep my work. If only I had a laptop or desktop, I would have understood better.

The same thing happened to me last week, it was rather frustrating but fortunate it was more of a free-write than working on something like the SEO post.

Good plan to work somewhere with an auto-save while that doesn't seem to be working on peakd.

WP was really good for drafting and it was great for on the fly notes, which is whY I have so many half finished posts there.

I guess people didn't want to hear about bathroom renovations anyway :D

Actually, yes I do. Off you go :)

Tomorrow.

Its better when its freewrite, one can still rewrite all over from the head without issues. But losing ones technical work that one has put much effort is not good at all.

one can still rewrite all over from the head without issues.

I disagree - when the flow is broken - it is gone :)

Actually yes, the enthusiasm one originally used to write may no longer be there and the originality of the post from ones head might not remain the same again. I agree

all the little nuances get lost when I try, in my experience.

Totally sucks man.

I had watched a movie and wrote up a great philosophical article about life that was also a review of the movie and a treatise on youth vs aging.

Then poof.. gone. The fuck? Yup the fuck indeed. All that insight gone in an instant. And yet, so like life.

lols - it was going to be your masterpiece.

In the past, I have tried to rewrite it when it has happened, but it is never the same.

honestly! it was the perfect post

🤣

The "Great American Post" :D

I only had this once so far, luckily. I was almost finished writing that post and boom...gone. I was pretty angry about it and could not believe it. I went for a short walk and decided to write it again, although it was late already. Since that I´m always have a second window with the drafts open, checking regularly if it has saved.

Yep, it used to annoy me a lot, especially if it was a complicated post or something that had some heart in it. The complicated ones were a lot of trouble, the ones with heart I can't rewrite.

It was a travel post with lots of photos. Upload speed wasn´t good here so it took a while. That was actually the most annoying thing about it. I´m actually a bit relieved that this does not happen only to me :)

Yep, that sucks.

The annoying part with this one was that the images were screen grabs, that I will have to grab again...

I´m actually a bit relieved that this does not happen only to me :)

As we get older, it tends to happen to all of us.

I have been going through this in silence. It happens mostly when I have a pressing piece and I am somewhat tired. Writing helps me relax which in turn helps me sleep easily without the usual chaos. Then I doze off and when I am coming to it... it's gone.

The agony. Creative births are hard so the deaths are painful as hell. Where I come from we say, pole sana I am very sorry!

Creative births are hard so the deaths are painful as hell.

Maybe there is a lesson in here along the lines of "kill your darlings" ? Gets us used to the feeling of loss.

Thankfully I haven't had that for some time. I remember losing one post 3 times and each one was getting slightly better. Sorry it happened to you but it did create another post to write about.

It used to happen more often back in 2017, so I don't mind the occasional loss. I like to write more than rewrite though :)

Technology is the animal it is and it can be a little unpredictable at times - but I think that we have come to rely so heavily on it and have become so accustomed to it

So it is. I just made the experience that my mail is uploaded (there are already upvotes) but then it disappears in nirvana. Szeemworld and BeeMe show it, but the link does not work. ERROR 404...Also some comments disappear. No matter if STEEM or HIVE, no matter if Steempeak, Peakd or Steemit... what's going on there?

Don't know about Hive in this case, but Steem wasn't showing posts.

Not good - I recommend using a content version system like coders use - it's good practice whatever you're working on and means you can fork your work too - I use sourcetree.

yep, I should. I work for a document management company :D

I tend to do 90%+ of my writing in a text editor and copy-paste it into peakd.com where I might do a few tweaks before publishing. Have lost too much work in the past by trying to do everything on a front end app. Learned my lesson the hard way.

Weird stuff also going on today with Steemit. The New page shows nothing newer than 7 hours old even though https://steemd.com/ shows that posts are being made.

Something I’ve been noticing about the Steem blockchain lately is that if you go to https://steemd.com/ and do some refreshes every minute or so, you tend to find a huge percentage of the activity is related to Splinterlands. Without Splinterlands, the Steem blockchain might resemble a ghost town.

Learned my lesson the hard way.

Yep, this is why I went to WP originally - which I used for my work earlier.

Steem fronts have not been showing posts, but there has been some going in and the autos are still firing. same thing happened last week - the place is a shambles.

never happened to me. sometimes (not that often) when there is a problem with saving i get an error that it did not save for some reason, and then i copy it somewhere else till i see what is going on. Did you try to ask peakd why is that happening?

Jarvie is commenting below, so I will relay what I know to him :)

Ha ha it happened to me at least 3 times, the first time a year ago, I had prepared a very accurate post of over 1500 characters, yes I know that for you there are few (LOL) but for me it was a Homeric poem, then ... skip the electricity, and he didn't come back all night because lightning had blown up the electrical cabin.

At first I stood motionless in the dark in front of the monitor which still showed a glimmer of brightness. After 10 minutes I got up from my chair and my head was terribly muffled, like the silent atmosphere that had been created around me and my superhuman efforts to write it.

When I rationalized the problem or the false problem I said the whole string of bad words I knew and went to sleep. I stayed asleep all night, listening to the roar of the rain, in the morning at school I was a human larva, and my students could not understand the problem. I never rewrote that post.
But I understood that technology cannot replace emotions, perhaps supporting or turning them on will always be possible.

but for me it was a Homeric poem

:D I know the type

It is a funny thing really, as what has been lost is actually little more than time and energy, but the emotional reaction to it can leave scars. Perhaps we need a little perspective from time to time :)

I think the feeling is like a part of yourself has been erased forever. In addition to simple words, there are sensations, concepts, emotions, searches that are simply reset with a click.
I felt something like this when a watercolor painting was destroyed by a careless spill of dirty turpentine over it.
Paradoxically, the suffering was less than the loss of the writing, perhaps because my prospect of being able to redo the watercolor was more encouraging.

In my dad's collection, there is a painting that has a tire mark on the back, he had left it leaning against the car and then reversed - it gives it character :) Another time, the national gallery lost one of his works that they had on display.... They made it up for it with a hideous piece and that sat in our garage for years - from a relatively famous Australian artist :D

Some things can't be replaced.

My nightmare confirmed.

Yep, it sucks

Hey @tarazkp that sucks, but another way to look at it is it gave you a new opportunity in a strange way to write something new. If it hadn't happened, who knows? In the famous words of "Adi Da"... Relax. Nothing is under control :)

That is actually a useful way to look at it - unexpected events, new thoughts, new solutions.

@tarazkp it has happened to me before but since then, I decide to type in a Note pad and save it. After, I copy and paste the typed documents into Hive and sometimes I type in hive and I use SAVE to save the documents. Even if I don't want to post it right away, I can always go to draft on HIVE and bring it out to continue editing and post.

Thanks, I didn't know how the Save button worked! ;D

Lol, I was being sarcastic, hence the winky face. I know how to use the save function :D

Ok that's good. How are you and your family?

Fuck that Keyser Söze!

This happened to me about two weeks ago...The autosave didn't work for some reason. Now I click save every 3.5 seconds.

Now I click save every 3.5 seconds.

This is what I generally do, but then get complacent. Kind of like the week after getting caught speeding.

The week? A day maybe. lol.

Remember that the speeding fines in Finland are means tested.
My friend's dad got caught doing 76 in a 60 zone a few years back - 320,000€ fine.

He had sold his business the year before for a lot of money.

Somewhere between annoyed and full blown tantrum (not that anyone usually witnesses them as they're usually internal XD).

Also depends on what it is. Last night I lost it (my sibling got to hear all about it before we went to bed) because my computer crashed (again) resulting in a lost cloth sim cache (this was actually important as starting that one again is tedious and I've been doing almost nothing else for the last three weeks and was finally making progress as I have settings that seem to work now) and what I thought was a lost text chunk, but fortunately the document I had cut the chunk from hadn't autosaved before the crash so the chunk was still in the original document.

Have also had it happen a couple of times on my blog when either the same thing has happened (computer crashed) or I accidentally navigate away from the tab (I have only now put in a thing that's supposed to autosave the form in case silliness like that happens but haven't fully tested it, all I know is that it can't recover from crashes, so I just save obsessively because I can at least save unpublished posts on my blog).

Don't think I've ever had it happen here though, but I've only ever posted only here a handful of times so it probably hasn't had time to happen yet XD

Are you recovering/rewriting the post that this was supposed to be or is it gone forever? :)

That sounds like it sucks. Does it mean you will be able to have better settings next time?

or I accidentally navigate away from the tab

I have done this often - but I count this as user error, so I can't complain :D

Are you recovering/rewriting the post that this was supposed to be or is it gone forever? :)

It might get a rewrite, but it depends on what happens today - there might be something more interesting.

The settings seem to be mostly good, I'll find out if I can get up to the part where the quick movements start :D

And I complain about the user error but usually calling myself an idiot instead of being annoyed at the computer then XD

Yes it happened with me, but know what I try to do is to write in Word first and then once I am almost done, I just pull it in Hive.blog.

Yep, this is what I did before moving to WordPress back in the day for it. I do the Word thing on my work PC also.

It isn't an uncommon occurrence still be the looks of it.

I feel good. Thanks for asking. About what you are talking about, I've had that happen a few times, so I use google docs which is more reliable when it comes to saving drafts.

Google docs is an option I could use. I wouldn't mind starting an off chain collection of my work also...

edit: btw, I am glad you are feeling good.

Thanks. I figured out how to post with Beempy yesterday. There is even a really good script to pull off all your works in Markdown format. I did that too. Still not sure where everything is saved or how to incorporate pictures, but I'll figure it all out soon. I've heard I can even sign offline transactions from my ledger. I'm going to try and change my Hive owner key using it next (don't want that kind of security for my posting or active).

I would look to the Bible. There is a story I remember about the Devil and Jesus having a competition. They both did spreadsheets and word processing but the power went out, and the devil had nothing but "Jesus saves." Next time, transfer the text of your posts to a text editor and save it from time to time.

On second thought, I don't think I read that myself and the bible is often misquoted.

Ha, now add to that being subjected to a series of daily sudden blackouts and power outages without prior notice as is my case here in my Caribbean paradise. You necessarily have to develop plenty of magic tricks and tons of witchery to counteract the frustration of lost ramblings.

I would share publicly in the wild all those magic tricks and witchery I've been developing. But then, I would have to charge a fortune for such outlandish services and twilight know-how. :)

Yeah, I am guessing that sucks, but then it keeps you on your toes ;)

Without a doubt my friend. All the time in my toes, especially when the battery of my ancient UPS and the one of my lappy are both just a dead paperweight without replacement. :D
