Unscheduled Maintenance

While I walked the dog, I came across this scene in a local park and thought it is a pretty good summary of spring in Finland. It also shows that while I was in a t-shirt, Finns are still rugged up. This is a big reason why there aren't many hot summers in Finland, because Finns wear so much clothing all the time to finally feel warm enough, it has to be almost 30 degrees. That is rare in Finland, so for me, I start getting ready for a warm summer at the end of winter, taking off a lot of clothing so I am always a bit cold.

It is only 13C, and I am feeling pretty warm.

My focus was on the dog, because I thought it looked pretty cool sitting like a wolf guarding the park, but with the kids on the swing, the child running to pat the dog - it made for a bit of action. The park itself is pretty lame, but without many other options, there are always people dropping by with their little kids and in the summer, it can get quite full.

It has just been Smallsteps and I the last few days and it has been really nice just to hang out, even though we haven't done anything overly special. Most of today was just me cleaning the house (Smallsteps her room) and playing a few games in between. But it was nice also.

I am looking forward to summer, even though I have little schedule now, it will be nice when no one else has much of a schedule either - so I will blend right in. But it also means that people will be moving a bit more slowly, spending a bit more time in parks, walking, and just generally being out and about. Because Finnish summer is so short and nearly everyone takes holidays around July, it makes it feel a bit more like a tourist destination. Most people are a bit more relaxed and friendlier.

There are 10 million Finns.
Five million summer Finns, and five million winter Finns.

For now though, I have to bide my time for another month or so until people start taking vacations. And on that note, my wife is back from her work trip and now we have to get ready to watch the Eurovision final as a family. Again, it is very tacky and while my wife is always hoping Finland wins, I enjoy picking on the performers, outfits and choreography.

I'm catty like that.

It feels like summer is in full swing here in Seattle, though typically our summer starts after 4th of July!

Midsummer here is June 22, but it night be 5 degrees :D

There is something special about those few months (four months for me 😄) when everyone slows down and enjoys life.

4 months is a great break!

Love this slice of Finnish spring — the wolf-dog on guard, the layers people won't let go of, the quiet joy of doing nothing special with someone you love. Eurovision roasting sounds like the perfect family tradition. Summer can wait; this in-between feels pretty real too.

I like the spring here. It moves from such a dusty hole, to fresh and green and you can really notice the difference in the atmosphere. Guessing it is similar in Canada.

The highest temperature I’ve recorded, for example, in summer (in Toronto), was 78 °F (approx. 26 °C)... So in spring it’s cool (maximum 68 °F, approx. 20 °C) – in Venezuela, we call the spring weather in Canada ‘Pacheco’.

We face 35-48°C for the months April - September. 25-30°C is not too hot for me at least, but > 35°C is something where I can't sit at one place for 5 minutes because of sweat;
Who is going to win in Eurovision?

I was rooting for Spain, but I support the decision to withdraw. We already know that the Eurovision final is facing the biggest boycott in the festival's history due to Israel's participation. Now I'm leaning towards Romania.

So, your favorite is Romania, let's see how they finish.

I don't think Israel should be there either. If the aggressors like Russia can't be part of international events, it should be the same for Israel and the US.

I don't miss the 40+ days at all. Thought when it is -30, then sometimes a bit of warmth sounds okay.

-30°C means lot of ice around you. I am 25 y/o and I haven't seen temperature in minus yet, not even less then of 5°C in my City.

You'll have to head into the hills

Too bad PeakD is still jacked up and you can only see half the photo. Just the upper half too, so I have no clue what is going on!

Yeah, I don't know what is going on with it.
