We Talk Friday
(WTF)
This is a semi-regular series that I will run on Fridays to hold discussions on a current topic from the week gone. The aim is to keep them light and conversational, though some might be heavier - regardless of the content topic itself though, just have some fun engaging and discussing with whoever happens to put in the effort in the comments section below.

We Talk Friday Ep. 55: Rebrand This
1. Rebrand Hive?
For some background, read this and the comments from @demotruk's post.
Yes, the name wasn't researched well when chosen.
There was even another Hive blockchain company, that was totally unassociated with this Hive blockchain. However, is a rebranding really going to do anything and is it really going to make a difference to onboarding? And then the question needs to be asked; what kinds of onboarded people would benefit Hive?
While I love the social side of Hive, I see Hive itself as more of a protocol that can be built upon and integrated with. This makes it a bit like rebranding IPv6 - Will more people use it? Maybe? I don't know, but what we really need is people to build some cool shit that can have any name it wants that will attract people to use it, and by default use Hive. No one cares about the protocol - they care about what they can do.
And we definitely don't need any more money-grabbers using AI to publish trash, stealing the work of others, and commenting absolutely useless shit.
2. What jobs?
If you were the parent of a ten year old child today, what kinds of jobs do you think they should be preparing for in fifteen years from now?
I had lunch with a friend and while we both agreed that when we were youngish, we didn't really know what we should do for a career (I still don't know), it was also a different time. Pretty much, there was still some level of "get educated and it will be okay" available, but that really doesn't cut it anymore. Education was already pretty outdated and nearly all the learning was done on the job, now it is completely irrelevant, and companies aren't willing to teach basics.
There are the trades like plumbing or electrical, but I suspect that even they are going to be severely cut, because it will become very apparent that a lot of the work isn't necessary, if standards are created to aggressively simplify the work.
3. Who Will Win?
This is for the Europeans (mostly) and of course Australians (because it is apparently European enough):
Who will win Eurovision tomorrow night?
As always, it is filled with some terrible songs, outfits and choreography - but it is always a fun watch. We will be making a bit of a night of it, as my wife will get back from the airport, we will pick up some pizzas on the way home, and then the three of us will settle in to listen to camp songs, corny jokes, and a lot of skin.

Honestly, don't think rebranding would do anything, unless drastic changes came along with it. Yea, it was a crappy choice, but it's done. An actual change on dhf usage would do wonders, because at the current state of affairs, I can't imagine anyone in their right mind to seriously invest in Hive (on the contrary). As for jobs, I would say anything hands on and with human to human interaction would be a decent choice. Regarding Eurovision... I really couldn't care less 😁. Have a great weekend!
Something has to be done there at least. Not sure what.
Will there be enough people who want to be touched by then, or will everyone be autistic?
Me neither, and as of now, not that much hope on that end; the ones that could actually do something don't seem that interested in doing so. Hope to be proven wrong!
I do hope there will be people that will still crave human connection; I know I will.
I've been in non-blockchain rebrand projects before, and it didn't tend to go well. I like "Hive." I'd be OK with frontends pushing for recognition, and let Hive be the interconnected background protocol for people to learn about later.
This is how I see it. The front ends (remember dApps) should be the focal point. What we need are projects that build and market well enough to attract an audience in their own right. Leverage the blockchain for transactions etc, and then if there are enough of these, they will all benefit from interconnected userbases.
For decades, we were sold the idea that success required a university degree, while trades were treated as second-class careers. That appears to be changing.
I read a comment recently by NVIDIA CEO, who said that the AI boom will create enormous demand for electricians, plumbers, and construction workers because building AI infrastructure will require “the largest infrastructure buildout in human history.” It seems that many skilled trades now offer better pay than a good number of white-collar jobs.
As for the rebrand, Demotruk makes a compelling case. Our little Hive blockchain is almost impossible to find amid all the other “Hives” out there. A distinctive name makes us easier to discover when our token moons and the masses come looking for us.
Because there is no one to do them. Young people aren't going into trades, despite the money. And those that do, are generally pretty unskilled, because they shortcut the learning. Not all - but many.
Even when Steem mooned, the masses didn't come.
Demotruk's data shows that when there was a significant increase in the Steem price there was a corresponding increase in user numbers, but this doesn't happen with Hive. One of the reasons could be that searches for 'hive' turn up every other hive ahead of us.
I think that a rebrand might help with perception, but at last it is the functionality and user experience that matter most.
Well, user experience could be great, if users behaved like great users :)
Some people may not care about the name Hive it self, but they will always stay for platforms that give real value and genuine connection
The child should prepare less for conventional jobs (fixed jobs) and more for adaptable skill clusters. Such as digital literacy (AI tools, data handling, some coding, maybe trading as well), communication and problem-solving. Because the real deal is not choosing a specific career but building the patterns to learn and adapt fast, work across different areas (at least able to manage) and stay economically relevant in a world where stability comes from skills, not mere titles.
However, if it comes to my country, a government job is a must, along with some part-time skill oriented field. For the skills, the times are changing real fast, nowadays. It is hard to lean over one skill.
Can't say anything about the Eurovision for now, because I just read about it. So, this time I will be getting my first experience, and wwill give my guess next year :)
Have fun!
One needs to know enough to understand when the computer gets it wrong, because "garbage in, garbage out" will always be a problem. Practical skills, blue collar trades, medicine, and art will always need the human touch.
This really makes me think about how hard it is to explain Hive to people who aren't into crypto. The name 'Hive' is so common that it gets completely lost on search engines making it almost invisible to the rest of the world.
I don't like most changes. For some reason I seem to think that changes can only be bad(at least most of the time). So I like Hive the way it is now.
On the jobs question, the simple answer is no one knows! The only certainty is uncertainty and so that is what the kids of today need to be better prepared for. Expect to have to retrain and re-skill, potentially multiple times in your life. Developing young people who are able to pick up and learn new concepts quickly is key but then so too is being able to deal with change itself.
to me, 'hive' is a cute, kinda cool and catchy name and the logo is really cool, but i could definitely think of a few names i would rather.. but, the real question is what would it do for this thing (platform, community, hive price, market cap, # of users, etc)
my answer.. what could it hurt? and as for spending MORE money on it.. why not have ppl volunteer to help? I have lots of free time on my hands.. :)
I think what you should teach a 10 year old is skills related to getting information and processing it and applying what she learns to solve real problems and to use technology and AI. Regardless of AI revolution those with great education will come out ahead of those without it... The world is getting more and more technologically advanced and not less... Plumbers will be replaced by AI enabled robots in the near future...
I'm really on the fence about the rebrand. I agree we kind of just went with something quick because of the circumstances, but I want to see some verifiable proof that it will actually make a difference. The last thing we need is to be relegated to even more obscurity.
What job? Building and nurturing adaptive or transferable skills is what one should focus on. And they should be picked according to the kid's affinities. I might suggest 'become an architect so that you could be good at business design, game design, or anything design'. But those are also specific enough so that one does not need to be an architect at all costs to be good at the rest. It's just the same mentality.
I am content with having studied psychology because at some point, I decided I could indeed choose whatever I wished to be dealing with. We're generally some pretty awesome machines for adaptation and finding ways to solve problems/ achieve goals. Unless we choose to be inhibited, instead, and play victims.
Or, should we try to predict the niche of the future that would bring the greatest success and joy? (Actually not the right strategy, if you ask me.)
How about Bounty Hunter?
Does anyone say 'I want my kid to become a politician'? Perhaps a lot of folks, but few would act on it.
A certain politician aorund here is famous for (a lot of things but also saying...)
I'd say we don't have enough farmers, too.
I remember wanting to be a teenage mutant ninja turtle. And here I am, I have the opportunity to make pizzas until the end of times.
