"A young hot-shot stock car driver gets his chance to compete at the top level."
- IMDB
I am surprised this movie is only 6/10 on IMDB, it's a fantastic classic and easily 7 or 8 stars. A long time ago I realized anything 6/10 or higher on IMDB I generally like and mostly avoid anything that has less.
Days of Thunder is one of Tom Cruise's best movies. Some fantastic support acting by Nicole Kidman, Robert Duvall, Michael Rooker, and Randy Quaid.
Tom Cruise plays a small town racing hotshot that has never raced stock cars in his life. Cocky and arrogant (pretty much his Top Gun character) he pisses off everyone around him, but this boy can drive (again, we talking about Top Gun or Days of Thunder?)
Trailer
While there are some fantastic racing scenes (I'm dropping the hammer!), my favorite scenes were the banter and shenanigans. I also really enjoyed watching Robert Duvall in this movie, it is one of his best roles.

Dropping the hammer
One of my favorite scenes is when Cole Trickle (Tom Cruise) is trying out a stock car for the first time and says he is going to drop the hammer and is told by Harry Hogge (Robert Duvall) "NO YOU'RE NOT!".
I am not particularly a fan of Tom Cruise but I don't dislike him like most people these days either. I do think he was fantastic in this movie and one of his better movies.
The movie is loosely based on a true story based on the life of Tim Richmond. Tim Richmond died a year before the movie was released due to complications with A.I.D.S.
Tom Cruise originally came up with the idea of the movie after testing a race car with Paul Newman.
Highly recommend checking out this movie if you haven't seen it.

I will have to see this one. I have also been intending to watch Top Gun again. It has been a long time. Sounds like a good pair for a double feature. Great review!
Top Gun II comes out this year!
Saw this at the cinema when it came out but wasn't over enamoured. I think a 6 is a fair result but I absolutely agree with you about it being an excellent performance from Robert Duvall.
Saw this in the theater when I was really young. Cary Elwes is the villain and it actually deals with concussions from crashing which makes it way ahead of its time. Dale Jr just retired early because of concussions he sustained while driving and sports like american football are having to deal with the realities of trauma occurring after big hits that can cause long term brain damage
