Witness Survey - @themarkymark

in #witnesssurvey7 years ago (edited)

In response to witness survey.

What is your position/stance on bid-bots (ownership/delegations/opinion)? - @abh12345, @ammonite

They are the natural progression of a flawed economic system. In the end, all social media platforms on the Internet have a promotion system.

I would much rather a system where good content gets rewarded and bad content gets buried. Neither seems to happen very often before or after bid bots.

^ 6 minutes make-up tutorial that most women that are old enough to use this site already likely know how to do. Not a single bid bot was used.

Comment with zero bid bots. Now a -15 Rep user.

My concern is there are now 100+ bid bots, most of which have zero care of quality and most don't run any form of blacklist. There is almost no incentive to have Steem Power other than delegating to a bid bot for the largest ROI available outside of Self Voting 100% 10 times a day.

What does the witness want to do to make the blockchain more user-friendly and help to onboard new users. What do THEY personally want to see done and what will they do to get it there? - @ericwilson

I think onboarding and marketing are the most critical issues. Before we can successfully do that, we need to fix the economic and scaling problems or we will lose more of our most valuable asset (users).

Do you think votes for witnesses should last indefinitely or should they time out (or perhaps decay over time) so that periodically voters will need to reevaluate and affirm their positions by recasting their votes? - @harvhat

I am not a big fan of vote decay. It will turn the community into a non-stop election. There is very little incentive for users to vote for witnesses and most don't do it effectively.

I do see cases where vote decay would help solve problems like user death or if they decide to spend their time on EOS instead.

Do you think the 30 witness votes each steemian gets is the correct number, especially in light of the fact there are only 20 top witnesses to be seated? - @harvhat

There is no right number, but I think that's a fair number. I think having more than the top 20 slots is important but having too many dilutes your influence.

What is a concern or two that you have about the #steem blockchain? - @johnspalding

  • Spam
  • Scaling
  • Centralization

Spam makes us as a community look bad and untrustworthy. Our technical growth rate will exceed hardware unless we solve the scaling problem. We are heavily dependent on a small group of people to do 99.9% of the work.

What are you hopeful about for the #steem blockchain? - @johnspalding

  • Removing Spam
  • Fixing Scaling
  • Moving towards decentralization

I think the content focus needs to be reduced for the blockchain to thrive. We need users to have more reasons and ways to use Steem (i.e. dAPPS). If the primary use case of Steem is to create shit posts, power down, and sell to an Exchange we won't be around long.

The majority of users are doing the work which is what I call the process of creating content and creating wealth with little to no investment. The crypto form of sweat equity. The problem is we need that many or more buying Steem to prevent the downward pressure on the price.

There will always be good people creating good content and doing good work that will be entitled to this wealth, but there can't be 99% take and 1% give. We need more reasons to buy steem and incentives to hold it outside of just delegating to bid bots.

What is the monthly cost of equipment? - @abh12345

~$400 plus non-witness equipment.

Where do your earnings go? - @abh12345

I haven't powered down, and it is paid powered up. I pay my bills out of pocket.

[Will you provide an] Alt accounts list? - @abh12345

What are the benefits associated with being a witness? - @klassic

I believe the question you are asking is what's the benefit to others for a good witness, but it might be what's the benefit to the good witness for being a good witness.

Either way, the answer is kind of the same. A secure, stable, and reliable blockchain protecting your assets.

How do I become a witness? - @steemingmark

Obtain a reliable server with the minimum specs, learn how to set up and maintain Steemd. Then blame yourself for everything that goes wrong on the blockchain.

What do you think the SBD [STEEM] price for a new account should be? - @harvhat

~$5 USD

What is a witness and how I become a good worker? - @rubaethsyed

A witness is a person or team who produces blocks for the blockchain, runs a stable price feed (hopefully), and votes to approve or deny forks.

If they do that reliably, they are a good witness. That doesn't mean they are a good person or as you call it worker.

Since there are only about 60 or so profitable witnesses slots right now, we should demand more from our witnesses. I believe witnesses should provide value to the blockchain and community. Although technically it isn't in the job description, the community sees witnesses as much more than they are.

Have you implemented any new procedures for evaluating potential hard forks? - @patrickulrich

I wanted to pull my support for HF20 because I felt it wasn't ready yet. This would have been witness suicide. As it was, I lost some big votes because I held off upgrading to v20 for a couple of days even though it was the right decision at the time.

I would like to see more time prior to cutting over a hard fork. More idependent code review and more complete test net. These are both are far more difficult than they sound.

How does a new user make the availability of his vote known to the cabal of witnesses wannabes trying to overthrow the current witness regime? - @grimgriz

I believe the better question is how does a new user educate themselves on which witnesses are competent and support their ideals.

Should we have interest for SBD? - @patrickulrich

No, not until market conditions stabilize. It's like fixing your fence in a hurricane.

What takeaways do you have from the Hard fork 20 issues that occurred? - @patrickulrich

I have very little voice, witnesses will follow what the top 20 do, forks need to happen more often so we get better at them, and more testing and code review needs to be done.

Do you think 20/21 top witnesses a good number or should there be more or less? - @harvhat

I think the current number is perfect.

Thank you for that. Brilliant and transparent replies and I totally agree on your points about bidbots and the fact we need a universal blacklist.
Now let's see how many replies from the top20 we get!
You need cloning mate!

👀

Did not know you were a @themarkymark alt... and being in between all that illustrious company
especially having met you in person :-)

Hahaha! I had no idea.. and man I am in good company... this might explain a lot though 🤔

Logic also dictates that you are both Ned and Bernie.

Ergo, Bernie also has wonderful hair.

Awwww , really you are too kind. Personally, I love your chicken also Colonel Sanders.

That is a trifecta of amazing hair right there!!... man @nedshair is gonna be so pissed... 💇🏻‍♂️

More of a triumvirate i think.

Well, @llfarms is our hairdresser so I have no choice but to be fabulous.

where's the hair when you need it @nedshair come out come out wherever you are!!!!!

Sorry, Ned and I have been hiding in our bunker so that we don't have to face the mean internet people and their questions. Can you believe they want transparency? Barbarians I tell you.

@llfarms

Ok, I was reading very seriously until this part. I almost spit my coffee on my laptop :)

@llfarms @berniesanders I always had a feeling you were the same person, but I can't just figure out how the @ned comes in after seeing his livestreams and also seeing LL on the steemfest stream :)

It is all movie magic. Like the moon landing.

😬

I expected most of the answers to this question to be 'no, fuck off', and so a little humour is welcome!

Yes, I almost spit my coffee on the laptop from laughing haha

I see stats saying that o only a small percentage of votes come from the boys, but they control a massive amount of the reward pool. We have efforts by groups like @steemflagrewards to deal with those who abuse them, but that's like pissing in the ocean. There's a short-sighted dash for cash going on. The blacklists should help, but it's clear most bots don't use them. Certain accounts that ought to care about their own reputation are selling votes to known and persistent abusers. They should be called out on this, and I've done so.

@themarkymark thanks a lot for answering my question I have upvoted and resteemed for you mate. Lol witnesses don't have to blame then selfs for everything wrong on the blockchain. Haha

What are the minimum requirements for a server? So I can start a Witness?

Are there any plans to make witnessing more efficient? I would love to run a little node or smthn on my old Gaming PC.
Because my PC just stands there and is not being used (didnt game for 2 years now) and wants to do some maths..
While I would love to distribute to decentralization, as student I have no money to rent a server..

Besides that, great Interview!
Greets from germany :)

Ideally, a 64Gb ram server with nvme drives and decent cpu.

But you can get by with 32gb ram and decent ssd disk if you don’t mind longer replay times.

Thanks for your answer.
I guess I still have to wait.. until the requirements are less or I earn money..
greets

The focus is reducing full node requirements but witness node memory creep may be addresssed at some point as well. Hopefully.

My concern is there are now 100+ bid bots, most of which have zero care of quality and most don't run any form of blacklist. There is almost no incentive to have Steem Power other than delegating to a bid bot for the largest ROI available outside of Self Voting 100% 10 times a day.

Yeah I've noticed that too, there seem to be more bidbots popping up every day it seems. The list on Steembottracker is getting bigger and bigger.

Not only that, but most of them aren't even usable. I mean, who wants to use a bid bot that only has a $0.50 vote or less?

Some have like 5 cent votes and charge 10 cent minimum bid.

LOL, just checked some of them and they're actually used by some people. With heavy losses of course.

Possibly just the owner.

Probably in most cases, other times just newbies I guess.

That one doesn't look like a loss to me.

My mistake, forgot that the bid value was in USD. That's what I get for replying before I've had any coffee...

Why did you skip your live stream today? A lot still rides on steemit's shoulders.

I had no live stream today.

@themarkymark I thought u said your Ned and Bernie? Which I would believe since you were talking about lower server costs and running 4 full nodes with a team (having hired someone from firefly no less) and then "Ned" lays off staff and reduces costs exactly as you were talking about.

As for Bernie what are the chances that you had 5500 Steem Monster alpha packs for sale and then beanie was giving away a similar amount?

Doesn't matter to me. Even though you flagged me for awhile I am no hater. Although I think you would be better served black listing only better targets ie. human trafficking, terror and hate groups, child porn ect. vs. people who copy paste or milk an air drop.

If your not "ned" any chance you would give us a post on your thoughts as a major active hodl'er on recent events?

@themarkymark I thought u said your Ned and Bernie?

It was a blatantly obvious joke.

If your not "ned"

I'm not Ned.

any chance you would give us a post on your thoughts as a major active hodl'er on recent events?

Still trying to process it all myself

Hi :) I don't mind bots but I don't want one myself because I want to be sure my upvotes go to post I like. Sorry if I've misunderstood your question.

I think witness votes should time-out. It could then be up to the witness to post explaining why he/she should continue and we could revote for them if we so wanted. The present system makes it very hard for any new blood to rise up the league table.

If there were no bidbots it would just be high SP users all auto upvoting each other and not reading the stuff they upvoted. Is that better somehow?

All the other new sites that are rewarding coins for content for have learned from steemit mistakes and take steps to limit circle jerk voting. Eventually real competition is going to rise up and just having been first won't save us anymore. If somewhere else does it better, and someone will, why would anyone come here?

You forget that competetors are good.
If Steem get's some competition, especially good one, steem has to continue developing.
Which is good for us ;)
