Feathered Friday - A couple of Crow visits in June 2017

in #featheredfriday5 years ago

Before I get to the pictures of crow visits in June 2017, I just wanted to mention that August has been a particularly challenging month on many fronts [NOTE TO MY MOTHER: No, mom - there's nothing going on that you're unaware of, promise! So please don't panic.... this has been a parental mental health service announcement... 😂 ]. And while I was hoping to have new shots to share for a Market Friday post, I didn't have the opportunity to snag any, so I had to dip into my archives again. All was not lost, though - I do have some new photos I took yesterday that I'm hoping to have edited in time for a Sublime Sunday post.

Speaking of editing, I thought I'd take a minute to explain what I mean by that, as different shutterbugs have different ideas as to what that means. For many years, I prided myself on not doing anything to my photos other than reducing the size, and sometimes cropping. I got it in my head that if I wanted to capture Mother Nature through my lens, I was doing her a disservice if I did anything else to my photographs.

Then, after a number of discussions with some photog friends, as well as reading different posts on the subject, I started doing small tweaks on some shots here and there. Mostly I simply adjust the exposure on PicMonkey, but every now and again, I'll edit out nasty blobs of bird poop little bits.

That being said, some of my favorite photographers obviously spend a great deal of time in post-production, cleaning up and perfecting their captures. And that's probably one of the reasons I'm having so much fun playing around with edits for tags like Sepia Saturday, since I've never really given myself to go wild and crazy with my wildlife captures.

All of which is a very long-winded introduction to my latest contribution to the Feathered Friday tag that @melinda010100 has kept flying on the Steem blockchain. But one last thing before I get started with my shots - be sure to check out the post Melinda did for this week's Feathered Friday. She has some awesome seagull captures!

Now here are sixteen shots from June 4th, and June 7th 2017 from my rather large unedited photo collection (which is actually different from my other rather large edited but not published photo collection 😜).

A couple of Crow visits in June 2017

  crow visits in June 2017
Around 8am on June 4th 2017, I spotted a pair of crows outside. While it was easy for me to see them, I decided to add a couple of arrows, just in case.

This is the smaller crow (who I called Smalls) on the lower left branch...

...and this is Biggs, who I later called Angel, perched on the upper right.

I think I've been spotted!

Smalls doesn't seemed particularly concerned with me snapping a bazillion shots.

About 20 minutes later, Biggs/Angel came down from the tree and grabbed a stale piece of peasant bread I'd tossed out as a bribe treat

Smalls flew over to this branch for a bite too

I'm not positive, but I think here he was saying, "thanks, crazy bird lady!"

A few days later, and a half hour earlier, Angel stopped by again.

Based on other, not share-worthy shots, Smalls visited too, but hung back in the greenery, while Angel perched and preened in the sunshine.

"I just washed my hair and can't do a thing with it!"

I think he's showing off a bit for his lady love

Or maybe just being silly!

Whatever the case, he's definitely being thorough!

One last good shake...

...before he turned into a shy guy. A moment later, he flew away.

Happy Feathered Friday!

@traciyork, In my opinion we all are one but different and we are one because of Mass Consciousness and i think that August was challenging for many souls. Good to know that you are reminding yourself little details of nature's aspect. Stay blessed.

They're so cute! I'm finally making some headway with mine. The whole extended family is in town, so there's a lot more to feed each morning. It's a job in itself, but I'm managing to satisfy about 35 crows, probably for another month or so. But the great part is, they are losing their fear of me just from my being out there on squirrel patrol, lol.

Wowsers, @free-reign! Your crew is up to 35 - and here I'm excited when five or six show up in my yard. And that is great, and from what I know, once they lose their fear of you, generations to come will recognize you as a crow friend. I hope they start posing for you in the near future. 😊

I love these photos @traciyork!! I think crows are awesome and you got some great shots! It sure looks like that is what Smalls was thinking as he was staring right at you..lol! 🤔 😁

Thanks so much, @deerjay! That's awesome that you like crows too - I think they're vastly underappreciated. Hope you're having a wonderful weekend! 😊

Expressive bird life interpretation, preening and cleaning all for you @traciyork bribery worked, he remembered!

Yep, bribes are a photog's best friend, @joanstewart! LOL! And thanks so much! 😊

Interesting, did you see it as a positive omen? I am reminded of Odin, perhaps he had two ravens, Thought and Memory.

I definitely saw it as a positive omen, @julianhorack! These crows are part of the reason I started taking pictures again a few years back. And yes, Hugin & Munin came to mind as well the first time I saw them.

Cool shots of the crows, when I first got back into photography with digital I was very much into the get it right on camera and n there is no need to edit, but then I read an interesting article where it basically said we were fooling ourselves if we believe that as you just letting the camera do the editing, now I shoot mostly in RAW mode and edit all of my photos to some degree or other

Thanks, @tattoodjay! And that pretty much sums up the articles I read...LOL! It's a "terrible" thing to admit, but I still shoot on Auto mode, and still haven't spent any time figuring out how to work my Nikon manually. Digital has made me a lazy shutterbug... 😂

Now I feel bad saying what I did but let me clarify
I may shoot in RAW mode instead of jpg but I do not shoot in manual very often at all only fir the long exposures sometimes
I mostly shoot in aperture or shutter priority mode so the camera is doing a lot of the work for me
Shooting manual mode isn’t all it’s cracked up to be as it’s so easy to get it wrong lol

Oh, don't feel bad in the slightest, @tattoodjay! Now I feel bad that you feel bad that I sounded like I felt bad... wait, now I'm confused instead! 😂

In all seriousness, I appreciate you sharing your process. I was more poking fun at my intentions when I first got my digital Nikon - I saw it as a great opportunity to refresh my photog brain on the intricacies of f-stops and shutter-speeds without wasting film and processing costs. Yet here I still sit, all these years later, with the setting still on Auto. 😜

But I do appreciate your clarification, you dear and kindly gentleman... oh wait, don't want to mar your tough guy repution again - my bad mister. 😊

Oh now I feel bad that you feel bad that I feel bad that you feel bad that I feel bad that you feel bad that I feel bad dang now I have lay track who feels bad and why lol 😂

Let’s both agree to feel good and have fun 😎👍😎
