White Silkie Hen.

Silkie chickens have been given their name due to their feathers which are fluffy and have the texture of silk and satin. Their unusual characteristics feature black skin and bones, blue earlobes, and five toes on each foot. (Most chickens have only four.) They have a calm manner and a friendly temperament.

In fact, they are considered to be the most docile of poultry. The hens become very broody and look after their young very well but lay only about three eggs per week. Silkie chickens make great pets especially as they can tolerate a bit of rough handling.

The plumage of Silkie hens feels like a mixture of silk and satin. This beautiful white one was behind an enclosure and I would have loved to pick him up and caress his pure, white feathers.

Some countries consider silkies to be part of the bantam breed but others classify them as large fowl. Almost all North American strains of the breed are bantam-sized, but in Europe the standard-sized is the original version.

Historically, silkie plumage was very unique but in recent years the silkie feathering has been developed in a few breeds and more particularly the Chabo breed. Their plumage has been referred to fur and down and unfortunately their feathers lack barbicels which means these silkies are unable to fly.

There are two, distinct varieties of Silkies: the bearded and non-bearded type. Bearded Silkies have an extra muff of feathers under the beak area that covers the earlobes. They are also distinguished by colour when entered into shows and these colours include black, blue, buff, grey, partridge, and white. There are other unusual colours available such as cuckoo, lavender and even red.

Silkies lay a large number of eggs which are cream in colour, but when they become broody this interrupts production. Hens will ideally produce up to 100 eggs in a year.

Oh my, he is pure fluffyiness, I just want to snuggle with that cutie.

Haha......Now you know how I felt @sunscape. She was so close and yet so far away. Thank you for dropping by.

Looking at the first image, I thought your White Silkie was a beautiful ornament or toy. I've never seen or heard of Silkies before. She's SO striking Trudee.

I have a dream of having a brood of bantams one day and would love to have a Silkie now as well. Love the way dreams can be created in this way. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

Many thanks for your welcome visit @allyinspirit Well, I really hope you will one day hold one of those very beautiful hens in your arms and I hope also that she (and the others you get) will produce many fresh eggs for you.

That's an amazing-looking chicken. I've never seen one quite like that!

In Latin America, there is a rare chicken breed that is completely black. It would be fun to see what happened if they were to meet! It would certainly be great for chicken chess, although good luck getting willing and cooperative participants for that!

Amazing bird, I've never seen anything like it! That's a chicken? Wow! U+R :)

I think they are the deluxe version of hens Keith imo. (lol) If the eggs taste as good as the hens look, they'd be a great asset for homesteaders or people with decent sized properties. Many thanks for showing them off on your page. Greatly appreciated my friend.

Howdy again trudeehunter! wow and wow! lol. I had no idea this type of chicken existed, it's remarkable. It looks like something that Australia would have alot of! Very interesting and educational post. And of course the photos are great too!

I'm very pleased to be the one to introduce these beautiful hens to you @janton I loved capturing those shots but I really wanted to pick one up to stroke those gorgeous, silky feathers.

Howdy trudeehunter! well these are magnificent birds, shockingly soft and feathery looking. Yes if you picked on up they'd have to be soft I'd think! I never knew there was such a thing as beautiful chickens! lol.

I'm glad to introduce you to these beautiful birds my friend.

Howdy this morning, at least here it is, it's a beauty too, sunny with mild temps. I think it's summer there right? Anyway, that was a great post and I'm glad to have learned about such an amazing chicken and I never thought I'd put those two words together! lol.

Summer is most definitely here @janton She has made her very uncomfortable presence felt in her usual sizzling, relentless manner. (lol)

Howdy again trudeehunter! oh really? how hot does it get there anyways? Hot here is 110 F which is 43 C ..is that they kind of heat we're talking about? and is it humid too?
