Day 6 - Human Rights continue

in #teammalaysia8 years ago (edited)
Today we visited Kampung Sg. Eloi, Pitas, a village located upper north and almost at the tip of Borneo. Our journey to this village took about 3 hours drive from a smooth road to a bumpy gravel road.

We made a stop at Pekan Pitas to have breakfast and some of the participants insisted on buying 'Adidas Kampung' a shoes made from rubber and suitable for jungle tracking.

We arrived to our destination on time. The community greeted us with their traditional gongs. Then, Noridah, our guide for the day, briefed us on the activity for the day. We're schedule to visit the comunity sacred mangroves.

Mangroves River Cruise

We need to ride boats along the Mangroves river to see the destruction on the mangroves tree areas. I was quite nervous to hear this as I don't know how to swim..I only know how to float...LOL. Luckily I was put in group with four gentlemen, so in my heart I told myself if anything happen, these guys can save me.😬.

Our journey in the Mangroves

The Mangrove Trees are Dying

It's so sad to see the mangroves trees are dying due to individual company taking over the land and converted it into big scale prawn farm. The community lost their ancestral land and the source of income from the mangroves river. This Mangrove plays multiple ecological functions essential to its surrounding habitats and an important resource for coastal communities.

Community Efforts to keep the Mangroves trees alive

The community told us that they have planted small mangroves trees to keep the Mangroves alive. However, it will took a long time for it to grow and they hope that the individual company will not destroy the area where they planted the small trees.

On our way back we made a stop at the community hall where they held their traditional event and meetings. This place is considered sacred for them. We're unable to visit the site as the river conected to the sea is on low tide and according to the boatman, it is hard to handle the boat in this condition.

After visiting the site, we have our lunch at the community's Balai raya (comunity hall). We're served with deliciois food and coconut juice fresh from the coconut tree.
