Dpoll 40: Who should pay for repairing the roads?

Driving a car is expensive.

I wish I could do without one and hope I can in a few years.
It is not only the yearly test that costs money but a car insurance is needed and I have to pay road tax.
In the Netherlands you pay road tax if you own a car. It does not matter where you drive it, how many kilometers/miles you drive or if you only need it an hour a month or 8 hours a day.

Road tax should be used for the roads but the biggest part is spent on something else. The amount you pay depends on how big/heavy your car is but also where you live. Not each Provence pays the same. Roads are not only used by cars. People walj, bicycle, use their electric- and motorbikes, tractor and horseson it.

Public transport in the country is not as good as in the cities or the west part of the country.
Frequently you need a car. The roads are bad where I live. This means big holes and driving in the dark. No investment in streetlights.
It somehow annoys me that the money we pay is never used to repair our roads. It damages cars and many accidents happen because people drive in the middle (the best part) to save their car and those on bikes do the same. If you drive at the right/left your car nearly falls apart and your kidneys hurt.

Why are the best roads always in the west, in big cities and the rest of the tax payers live in the middle ages?
I pay road tax too and the damaged road is not because I drive a big car or too much but it does giveme extra costs.
Is a normal road too much asked?

If I go abroad I need to pay road tax for the use of certain highways or tunnels.
Foreigners do not need to pay road tax if they visit the Netherlands.
The Dutch car owner pays for all roads, stoops, the foreigners passing by/visiting, the trucks, etc. pay nothing.

In the past plans were made to change our road tax system.
Which system is the best?
Everyone pays for certain roads / tunnels, car owners pay road tax, everyone pays tax for taking care of stoops, roads, bicycle roads, etc, you pay over the amount of kilometers you drive, for the weight of your vehicle or?

moet worden betaald door degenen die de atmosfeer vergiftigen en een levend wezen doden - niet 1 boete, maar een levensbelasting

This is about the roads. There are many with a 45 km car and they use the road too. Same with bicycles and motorbikes. We have roads for bikes only and stoops. Who pays for that? Only those who drive a car? That doesn't make sense.
Thank you for voting.

Sorry, the translation does not make sense.
You mean people who drive too fast and cause accidents?

nee)

@pereu4ivatel Okay the answer is clear.

Yesterday I noticed a message from a phone provider was translated well and I wonder why that worked fine. 🤔 At least it is better as nothing. I learned it depends on the sentence and words you use. The shorter a sentence the better the translation.

You are fine if stoops and roads for bikes are no longer there and car owners are king on the road only?

The tax should be included on the Gas price, the more gas you use...so is your contribution for the roads..

There is already a lot of tax on the gas/petrol. This means car users are the ones who pay for the stoops and many roads for bikes too? What is their benefit?

Thank you for your vote. Enjoy your day. 💕

I think a system in which everyone pays for everything is fairest. Even if you pay for things you don't use yourself, in most cases you still get an indirect benefit from it. For example, if I don't drive myself but have my purchases delivered by the post service, I still benefit indirectly from the roads.

That is a good point plus stoops and roads for bikes need to be payed too. So somehow it should be into the tax we pay once a year to the city/provence. That would probably be 10 euro/year or even less.

The reason why it's done by car weight is this: https://streets.mn/2016/07/07/chart-of-the-day-vehicle-weight-vs-road-damage-levels/

But I will add the caveat that I agree with your overarching point that it isn't fair that your local roads, in an area where having a vehicle is more necessary, aren't repaired. I don't think localizing it would be the solution as it would be a less dense area I presume so the local taxes wouldn't add up to as much as necessary, probably. So they should just work on reallocating where the money goes so that it's more fair to the rural areas.

Thank you for your vote and explanation.

So car users are the ones who pay for all roads, including these for bicycles only and the stoops?.
How about those 45 km cars for "handicapped" people?

Where I live, there aren't any roads for bicycles only. And a) since the bicycles aren't really damaging the road and b) bicycles are more of an option for poor people than cars are and c) bicycles are more eco-friendly, it behooves society to encourage more bicycle riding.
I don't know what you mean by stoops - here a stoop is like, the stairs or landing in front of an apartment.
Most disabled people who could use one can't afford the fancy cars and rely on public transport; if they are rich enough to afford the fancy expensive car, then they can afford the taxes that go with owning a car. I've never owned a car - in the US, where it super sucks to not own one because everything is built for one - because I can't afford it. At one point I was trying to save for one and friends didn't understand why I didn't just take my savings and use it as a downpayment rather than save the full amount, which is what I was trying to do. I said it's because I can't afford a payment plus gas plus insurance plus registration and license and whatnot plus any repairs that might crop up plus tax ...because I understood the costs of owning a car. It's part and partial to the privilege. As a pedestrian, not only do I not wear down the roads the way a car does, but they're not even built for me - I am shunted off to the side at best, walking on unsafe landscaping or in with six lanes of traffic moving at 40mph because there is literally no sidewalk at other times, cut off by construction when there is a detour for cars but not for pedestrians so I have to add a mile circling around, nearly getting run over by cars when I have the crossing signal because they don't look for pedestrians, etc. If they made roads for pedestrians, I'd be happy to put my road wear penny in the pot, but as it is they aren't built for us at all, at least not where I live. And that goes for bicyclists, too - not built for them, either, and the motorists seem to think they shouldn't be allowed to exist on the roads at all and sometimes purposefully do things to scare or hurt them because they resent not being able to speed!

Stoops are roads for pedestrians and next to it we have roads for bikes through the whole country.
After reading all these answers I think it is a society thing. We all should pay for everything. Even.if you do not own or drive a car you use services that might use a car. The ambulance, the garbage taken away, a parcel you order online and delivered on your doorstep, etc.

I hooe to be carless one day or perhaps sharing with someone. I know in the cities these options are there. If you only drive a few times a year the costs for a car are too high.

At the time I had no car I could take the train or a cap, afgord the high prices but not these days.

Thank you for your vote.

As far as I know, this is how it works in my country (Hungary), but car drivers also have to buy freeway access passes.

Thank you for your vote.

I think it should be that way and it's no problem if you pay to use a highway. It is the same in France, Austria and soon Germany too but that counts for everyone, foreigners included.
In the Netherlands only the car owners pay for everything.
Since we pay tax to the city/provence yearly for the house you own or rent, the garbage, the dog/s you they could collect that part too.
