Guess I was just looking for an excuse to write this one, even though I wasn´t looking for it. It happened when I was strolling through the POB community this week because of me challenging myself to engage more with different communities. It made me think about where to post next week on Thursday.
The idea to revisit the Gems community surfaced, as they should definitely hear about my Midnight Gems Sessions.
So I looked around there and found this Gem by @gatubela full of pictures of what seems to be a carnival parade in a Venezuelan town. It contained this picture, and that photo whispered in my ear....

It was a whisper filled with memories, reminiscing days long gone, filled with music that I normally don´t listen to, and a type of fiesta I did not even like, at first.
Because carnival in The Netherlands looks nothing like the awesome pictures in this post, it looks more like this:
And you should only celebrate it if you were raised in the spirit of carnival. Which means being born below the big Dutch rivers where the catholic still rule. Because this is a catholic alcoholic party, not suited for atheists or protestants. You can pick those people that were not raised in the spirit of carnival out easily. They are too loud, too dressed up in the wrong outfits, and too drunk.
Being an import Brabander myself, meaning that I lived above the rivers till I started university, I refrained from the feast myself those first couple of years. Until that day when I had a local girlfriend, who made me do it.
It was an Epic fail, but I lasted one-night thinking the first, the last, and an eternity of not gonna do this again.
Well as you know eternity is a very long time, and meanwhile, I got well-established out there in the province. My job as a DJ and Bartender made me do it a second time, but this time it was so much better.
That is because I don´t get carnival unless I am drunk and working. Yes, I do not even get it when I am drunk, because I tried that on the nights I wasn´t working that year. But the nights I worked I had the time of my life.
Crazy people, crazy music, and crazy busy. You work like an idiot, drink like a fool, and watch the people behave like idiots and drink even more than I did. This really worked well for me, but the best time was when I could get into the DJ Booth and play those songs I had never played before.
This place was an alternative rock and dance club 360 days a year, but during these 5 days it was Villa Fiesta and I could play songs like:
Now that song was my signature song, I guess there were worse....at least in my humble opinion. I mean this one did not leave my head this year after hearing it once:
Or this great parody of a soon-to-be classic:
It was an awesome time, and I loved it every year a little more. And every year I tried to go one night without having to work, but every year that was the most disappointing night of the carnival.
An import Brabander will probably never truly get it, but I found my way to enjoy it. And ever since I moved to Spain and I see those pictures on Fakebook I miss it. Probably one of the few things I miss next to DFutch food, but I also know it will never be the same again. The club I worked is closed, I would not be working anyway and I can no longer drink as I could back in the day.
What I am left with is a box of memories called my head, and the dearest memory is this one:
You heard my signature song, about "Mijn Konijn en Ik," which is Dutch for "My rabbit and me". Now do not look for any deeper meaning to these songs, there are non. It´s really about a guy and his rabbit.
Well that last night of my last carnival I had an announcement to make, it was a bit premature but I did it it anyway "My rabbit and I will soon have a little rabbit."
My girlfriend was three weeks pregnant at the time with the only true Brabander in our little family.
He is now very close to becoming an adult, but every time I hear this song, I think of carnival, my life in the province and of course I think of him and how he was in the belly of his mom while we danced to this song on that last night of the carnival. Which was probably my last night of carnival ever....although an eternity is a very long time.
That was it for my Spreading The Vibe on Sunday.
What is Spread The Vibes

Hello! First of all I want te to thank you for reading my post. I'm happy you liked it and that made you go back in time to remember those days you maybe miss a little bit and that also had inspired you in some ways to write this post about the carnival days in your town. Each country celebrates carnival in its own way, for us in Venezuela is just like a party and it's not related to religion (although there are some "problematic" religions that think about it like something bad, which I don't understand, I mean, relax, it's just a fun party 🤦🏻♀️ hahaha). I read the carnival you describe is a little more extreme hahaha, you don't see dressed up people walking drunk in a parade here 🤭🤭🤭.
Although eternity is a long time, I think you should dare to celebrate the carnival again but in another city or country so that you have a new vision of this celebration and forget about those rowdy drunks in disguise and take the carnival for what it really is, a party full of fantasy. I'm sure that Rio de Janeiro's carnival would change everything you think about this celebration hahaha, there's no doubt about it you should try to go at least one time in this eternity 🎭🥳💃🏻 , well, me too 🤔 I haven't gone yet either 🥴😫😕☹️
Thanks again and have a nice day 🍀
😺🤘🤗
Thanks for the awesome comment and if it´s up to me I would probably come over to Venezuela to celebrate it, as I love America Latina but moved from the Netherlands to Spain and kinda got stuck here...which is more like America Latina then the Netherlands but still not the same.
Thanks again for the lovely comment.
You're welcome! I hope you can come and visit Venezuela soon, we have everything here, beach, desert, snow, mountains, plains, jungle, waterfalls, etc. and I hope you can also visit all South America, it's an exotic and amazing place. Well, Spain is beautiful but has nothing to do with our nature, this part of the world is something different and unique. Are you from The Netherlands or you just lived there?
Sorry for my very late reply I just totally missed your comment. But yes I am from the Netherlands, living in Spain and having a soft spot for America Latina. I only been there once for three weeks in Nicaragua where the mom of my girlfriend at that time lived.
But I have been in love with the continent ever since
Well, I don't know how the Netherlands is but I have seen in the tv and the internet that has beautiful places and nature. Obviously is very different from South America in everything hahaha although I don't know how different is your country from Spain, must be a little different because Spain has a mediterranean weather.
I haven't been in Nicaragua but I know that is a beautiful country.
Now a dificult question, which you prefer or like the most, your country or Spain?
