Blinking eyes open to the light of 2020 with the most modest, and ambitious, of expectations: Hope.
Day one, of the new decade, like a shy tendril uncurling in the sun or a humble sail unfurling in the wind...
Grateful for old friends & a terrific piece of good news I just received:
A fine publisher has accepted my
latest book —- a collection of essays, fiction & conversations —- for publication!
This seems a propitious start & good reason to celebrate :)
Wishing you all success in what matters to you & here’s a poem that I hope will inspire your Day 1:
Love After Love
The time will come
when, with elation
you will greet yourself arriving
at your own door, in your own mirror
and each will smile at the other's welcome,
and say, sit here. Eat.
You will love again the stranger who was your self.
Give wine. Give bread. Give back your heart
to itself, to the stranger who has loved you
all your life, whom you ignored
for another, who knows you by heart.
Take down the love letters from the bookshelf,
the photographs, the desperate notes,
peel your own image from the mirror.
Sit. Feast on your life.
