Cascos Vikingos hechos con papel maché / Viking helmets made of papier-mâché [ENG-ESP]

in Build-It3 years ago

Today I want to show a craft that my brother and I made a long time ago, I will tell you how this idea started, it turns out that at this time at home there was a lot of harvest of totumos, and my grandmother only used the inside to prepare a medicine so there were many dry and hard pieces of totumos that we used as hulls.

In this we came up with the idea of modifying them to make our Viking helmets, what I came up with was to use the technique of paper mache which consists of cutting out pieces of paper and glue them together until they are quite solid and we would use the pieces of totumos as a base for the helmet.

Unfortunately at that time we did not have a device with which to document the process, however I will make an effort to explain everything in detail, the realization began simultaneously each person would work on his helmet, the first thing was the preparation of the paste to adhere the papers to the hull, this is prepared with a teaspoon of cornstarch in a glass of water is completely dissolved and brought to the was until boiling, you must be very careful when preparing this mixture because when boiling rises and can spill from the container if you are not careful.

Once the paste is cold, proceed to mix with a little glue the amount to be used, in a 50/50 proportion. Once this is done, begin to glue the paper strips over the entire surface and let it dry in the sun until it is completely dry, repeat this procedure until the hull feels quite thick and solid.

The next step was to add cardboard strips to assimilate the joints and rivets that are usually seen in Viking helmets, the cardboard used for these strips was cardboard box of those that are corrugated in the center to which we also applied a layer of papier mache to ensure its hardness, for the rivets we used toilet paper to be much more moldable, we mixed the paper with paste to make it moldable, done this we made small balls that we were sticking on the cardboard strips.

For the horns (buffalo or bull type) we used newspaper with adhesive tape to mold the shape, once the shape was obtained we applied the same technique of paper mache all over the surface until it was quite solid, once this was done we did not glue it to the hull applying more paper mache on the base so that it would be well attached.

In the case of the deer antlers we chose to look for some branches that resembled the antlers of a deer, although it was impossible to find two branches the most important thing in this case is that both have similar thicknesses and even weights, made this as with the bull antlers was necessary a layer of papier-mâché to make it easier to adhere it to the hull.

With all the pieces attached to the case we proceeded to paint them, for the base of the case we selected a gray color that resembled the color of the metal, due to the irregular and a little rough texture of the Viking helmets, it was not necessary to make great effort to cover or polish the unevenness or marks left by the pieces of paper on the contrary these provided some realism, as of the beaten metal.

For the rivets I began applying a layer of black on all the strips which with a brush with little load I began to brush with circular movements on the black to give the sensation of the rough metal without polishing finally and as a decorative way with some scraps of stuffed cloth that we got at home we cut some strips and we placed them in the base where the horns begin.

This is a project that requires a lot of patience and sunny weather to dry well the layers of paper, if someone is encouraged to make this project try to take a look at the sky if the sun is on your side you have the blessing of Odin to start this project, if you like it leave your comments or questions.

me encantan. Buenísimos para cosplay! :) <3
