See also part 1 and part 2. This is the final part of the very best cherry picked images from the authors personal archives, stretching back over a decade. Dug up, refreshed, and posted online for the first time here. Images have all been watermarked and reduced to web optimized size. Contact us for originals.
As explained prior, these aren't all perfect shots. Some were taken on prosumer digitals, the majority on older model smartphones I had at the time. However in this final part, we'll be catching right up to date. Next post will be switching to Sattahip and Chonburi for some very latest classic pickup truck sightings!
BMW projects
BMW 507 Coupe 1950s
Above: Starting with one we missed in part 1, back in the Mercedes and BMW garage along On Nut road, Bangkok. Below: A different hidden location for BMW restoration by 2 older Thai brothers trained to master technicians by the factory back in the 1980s. These are some of their projects. Here's another place we need to call in on again!
Peek-a-BMW
They also had this humble base model 316, which was in an incredibly clean condition. Like new. Love the alpine white, and the proper euro spec chrome bumpers - a must.
BMW 316 (e21)
Sticking with BMW for the moment, around the same time driving through Bangkok one day I found myself behind this little yellow 2002 touring. That's not a car you see often anywhere nowadays, let alone Thailand. It was being used like a daily driver ...
Spotted in downtown Bangkok
Mercedes-Benz
Mercedes have been around and sold and even manufactured cars in Thailand for a long while. There's a wide selection of them available in varying states, from the concourse to the bare shell, as we'll see in the next few shots. First, a lovely SL convertible, known as the 'Pagoda' to many. The 280SL was launched in 1963 with a clean sheet design from Mercedes. It still looks fresh 50 years later. This one was spotted on a dealers lot.
Mercedes Pagoda
Now an older SL, looks to be a 300SL shell, and in not the greatest condition. However with the right knowledge, perhaps this could be turned back into a car again?
Some TLC required
Potential? Sometimes all you need to get going is a solid straight shell!
It may have once looked a little like this car below.
Back at the Show
Meanwhile, a couple more we missed in previous parts. A couple of crazy Nissan from local tuners and aftermarket sponsors.
It's very common in Thailand still to see the 'pretties' promoting the products. The woke me-to crowd didn't reach here yet ...
One way to promote your custom wheels brand ...
Americana
There's more of this also, so for completeness more shots of the trucks which never made the previous installments
This one left in a somewhat authentic state of patina is a great look. Preservation sometimes is better than restoration.
Preservation vs Restoration
More groovy old stuff at the retro market where the trucks were photographed.
Retro Interlude
Hello Kitty VW Bus
There's more! How about a Pink Bus ... parked under the Ambassador Hotel, Bangkok
Pretty
It looks to be a tidy paint job, and very hello kitty esque
Finale - Classic Red Porsche 911
This whale tail 911 was a real surprise to see out and about, again, downtown Bangkok a few years ago. Never seen it again! Our final treat for today.
Stay tuned for some very recent interesting spots and more to follow from the archives soon. NewtonClassics is all about retro, cars, mancave stuff, adventures, and even kittens.
I only ever saw it once!
