April ProgBlog #3: oh snap.

in #aer3 years ago

There is a snap 3 day lockdown which my parents have arrived just in time for, and my newfound problems with the snapping tool in Blender.

I'm mildly annoyed about it because I won't be able to train or go see my parents over the weekend.

I've gotten onto retopologising Zara. I know I said I wanted to animate first but I realised when I was rigging Red that I'd stuffed up some bits in the rig so needed to rerig Zara anyway and figured I may as well retopo and rebake seeing as I have to rerig.

It's a bit denser than the current low poly mesh shown below, and I'm trying a few things but am struggling to get the flow I want and avoid overly long rectangles and weird triangular shaped quads (and trianges but they're less critical as long as they're out of the way and not in an area that deforms a lot).

All the tools in Retopoflow such as the Patches one being demonstrated makes a job that I find unpleasant so much quicker and easier. It was definitely worth the money.

Acaedia is going slightly better, I've nutted out the three tier buffer garden that contains commswitch, a toilet block above it (which I was silently screaming about as I was basically doing it because I'm a completionist as even my 12yo was saying that there wasn't really much point in doing it because it's probably never going to get seen) and a small garden with a water feature on the very top.

Here's where I'm trying to figure out the tough layout of commswitch, there is some big computer bank thing in the middle and there will be a lot of smaller stations around it.

And one of the more satisfying aspects, turning on all the other layers to show 12yo who after seeing Red for size comparison, was spun out at just how big what I've already done is and that I'm not 90% finished (he asked "you have to be at least 90% finished right?" nope I'm not even 90% finished this tower XD).

Didn't get quite as much as I wanted done today as I was trying to catch up from some stuff that I didn't do over the last couple of days (yesterday's zoo excursion was planned, some shenanigans that messed up Tuesday and Wednesday were not). Guess I'll have Sunday and Monday to try and make up seeing as all plans have been forcefully cancelled.

This post also appears on my blog.

Want a crowd character? If you interact frequently with me here (either on my posts or your posts or better yet both!) or on one of the linked Discord channels, all you have to do is let me know and tell me what you'd like :) Everything you need to know is (probably) here and if it isn't just ask (sorry the link goes offsite to my blog where the layout is how I want rather than the one here which is only here because the original one was).

Thanks for looking! ^_^

retopologising

Is this making futuristic apologies?

I...er...wat XD

It's remaking the topology just in case you actually didn't know and weren't just playing with word sounds XD

I think it was how Harrison Ford apologized to the replicant in Bladerunner

I had an inkling, but I haven't really got into 3D at all. I wish i was smart enough.

Doesn't require much in the way of smarts (I mean I'm doing it), just the desire to solve endless problems and either the imagination to make stuff and/or interpret someone else's designs.

Oh, and also an inordinate amount of time. Seeing as you seem a bit short on that it might not be the best hobby to take up unless you're willing to drop something else XD

Man you know, Everyone telling me modeling in blender is so much easier than maya, Sadly i dont have good modeling skills nor blender, i wouldve tried giving it a shot

Blender is easy enough to get, you can totally give it a shot and see if you find it easier or harder or the same XD

I can't really compare the modelling as I used a trial version of Maya for less than the equivalent of a working day trying to nut it out and gave up way too easily (mostly because I was idiot testing a bunch of 3d apps to see which one would be easiest to pick up, I did not find it easy to pick up XD). It's not altogether difficult in Blender and I'm really not good at modelling either.

The Retopoflow addon that I bought is purely to make retopo quicker and easier, it can be done in straight Blender as well and I have done it but I hate it.

The building is just a bunch of shapes that I'm snapping together but the snap tool is misbehaving, I think it's something to do with or possibly a combination of the amount of objects (there's a lot making up this building and there's going to be a lot more) and the size and shape of some of them (the ramps are weird shapes and very big).

oh thats interesting really , I actually used Blender on my previous company, but we only used it for Comp just cause it was free haha, But havent tried using it for modeling or lighting nor rendering , I might give it a shot and download this one !

Cheers man !

I'm a bad example of modelling, lighting and rendering as I haven't done anything good for quite a while, but there are a few people who have and some of them are even scattered around here somewhere. The website has a pretty good showcase obviously.

Looking forward to seeing what you came up with whenever you have some time to play ;D

for me i have always enjoyed the Lookdev process, Doing the textures , Lighting and doing final look, Modeling is my weakest skill sadly, But what i will do is give it a shot ! why not :D
