Como les comentaba hace un par de semanas, tengo una gran afición por la literatura. Me gusta leer novelas de fantasía, thrillers, viajeras o ficción, pero en los últimos años he tenido una gran fijación con autores venezolanos como Leonardo Padrón, Francisco Massiani, Teresa de la Parra y hasta ahora mi gran favorito, Eduardo Sánchez Rugeles.
As I mentioned a couple of weeks ago, I have a great passion for literature. I like to read fantasy novels, thrillers, travelers or fiction, but in recent years he had a great fixation with Venezuelan authors such as Leonardo Padrón, Francisco Massiani, Teresa de la Parra and until now my great favorite, Eduardo Sánchez Rugeles.
En esta oportunidad quiero hablarles un poco de su novela Etiqueta Azul, Blue Label. ganadora y merecedora del Premio Iberoamericano de Literatura Arturo Uslar Pietri del año 2010.
This time I want to tell you a bit about your Blue Label novel, Blue Label. winner and deserving of the Iberoamerican Literature Arturo Uslar Pietri Prize of the year 2010.
La historia gira en torno a Eugenia Blanc, una estudiante de 5to año de bachillerato y joven caraqueña de clase media que vive inmersa en el hastío y la locura de vivir en Venezuela en plena crisis económica y social, y se encuentra desesperada por salir del país, por ende, busca todas las alternativas posibles que la lleven a alcanzar su objetivo.
The story revolves around Eugenia Blanc, a 5th-year high school student and a middle-class young woman from Caracas who lives immersed in the weariness and madness of living in Venezuela in the midst of the economic and social crisis, and is desperate to leave the country Therefore, she looks for all the possible alternatives that will lead her to reach her goal.
Pero la única opción que tiene es buscar a su abuelo paterno, un francés, que reside en Altamira de Cáceres, un pueblito recóndito del estado Barinas. Para lograrlo Eugenia emprende un largo viaje desde la capital hacia el interior del país junto a sus compañero de clases, Luis Tevez y Vadier. Esta cruzada representará el camino hacia la adrenalina, el insight de cada personaje y un retrato crítico de un país en manos de políticos mediocres.
But the only option he has is to look for his paternal grandfather, a Frenchman, who resides in Altamira de Cáceres, a remote town in the state of Barinas. To achieve this, he undertakes a long journey from the capital to the interior of the country with his classmates, Luis Tevez and Vadier. This crusade will represent the path to adrenaline, the insight of each character and a critical portrait of a country in the hands of mediocre politicians.

A pesar de no ser una obra nueva y que además leí en mis días en la universidad (por ahí en 2017), considero que esas páginas no pierden vigencia y es una lectura que muchos podrían disfrutar en esta extensión de la cuarentena. (Si lo has leído, déjame tu comentario), y si no lo has hecho aún, hoy quiero mostrarte 5 temas interesantes que abarcan estas 250 páginas:
Despite not being a new work and that I also read in my days at university (around 2017), I consider that these pages do not lose validity and it is a reading that many could enjoy in this extension of the quarantine. (If you have read it, leave me your comment), and if you have not done so yet, today I want to show you 5 interesting topics that cover these 250 pages:
- El desapego por el terruño: Desde el capítulo uno, se entiende que Eugenia no se siente parte del gentilicio venezolano. De hecho, en un primer diálogo, la maestra le preguntó qué quería ser de grande, a lo que ella respondió: Francesa. Esto también va de la mano con el desarraigo hacia su propio país a causa de los problemas que lo ahogan como una economía fracturada y desesperanza aprendida de su gente.
Detachment from the land: From chapter one, it is understood that Eugenia does not feel part of the Venezuelan demonym. In fact, in a first dialogue, the teacher asked her what she wanted to be when she grew up, to which she replied: French. This also goes hand in hand with the uprooting towards his own country because of the problems that suffocate him as a fractured economy and despair learned from his people.
2.El desconocimiento de muchos jóvenes sobre cómo se vive fuera de la capital. Eugenia mencionaba lo siguiente: “Sabía que existía Valencia, también había oído hablar de Barquisimeto, los demás nombres son solo remotos jeroglíficos para mi” (p.54) Es decir, que la pesar de ser un país pequeño en comparación con los del resto de la región, los chamos no conocen gran parte de la geografía nacional.
The ignorance of many young people about how to live outside the capital. Eugenia mentioned the following: "I knew that Valencia existed, I had also heard of Barquisimeto, the other names are only remote hieroglyphs for me" (p.54) That is, the weight of being a small country compared to the rest of the region, the Chamos do not know much of the national geography.
3.El círculo familiar disfuncional (reflejo de la mayoría de las familias venezolanas) es otro punto importante en la obra. Eugenia tiene madre con trastorno anímico de la personalidad (depresión, específicamente) y un padre que la abandonó desde muy niña por dedicarse a ser un actor fracasado. A lo largo del libro se vuelve cada vez más serios y complejos los pensamientos de la chica, e incluso sale a relucir su gran rechazo hacia sus parientes.
The dysfunctional family circle (a reflection of the majority of Venezuelan families) is another important point in the work. Eugenia has a mother with mood disorder (depression, specifically) and a father who abandoned her from a very young age to dedicate herself to being a failed actor. Throughout the book the girl's thoughts become more and more serious and complex, and even her great rejection towards her relatives comes to light.
4.La política también es el centro de atención: nombran los infortunios que han suscitado en el país tras la llegada de Chávez al poder y los daños ocasionados por la revolución Bolivariana como el aumento de la delincuencia, el deterioro de las principales ciudades del país, la corrupción y la terrible burocracia en las instituciones públicas.
Politics is also the center of attention: they name the misfortunes that have arisen in the country after the arrival of Chávez to power and the damages caused by the Bolivarian revolution such as the increase in crime, the deterioration of the main cities of the country, corruption and terrible bureaucracy in public institutions.
5.La americanización de nuestra cultura se hace presente en toda la novela, especialmente la música que acompaña la novela, Visions of Johanna del cantante Bob Dylan, una canción que evoca la nostalgia, un largo camino recorrido y el amor furtivo y apasionado que nace entre los protagonistas.
The Americanization of our culture is present throughout the novel, especially the music that accompanies the novel, Visions of Johanna by singer Bob Dylan, a song that evokes nostalgia, a long journey and the furtive and passionate love that is born among the protagonists.
Y ni hablar de los diálogos tan llamativos para el público joven venezolano y de cualquier país que quiere conocernos mejor, llenos de palabras tan comunes como: chama, marico, pajuo y ladilla. Estoy segura que cualquiera podría conectar fácilmente con esta maravillosa y melancólica historia. Hasta aquí espero haberte animado a leerla y saber cuál es su sorprendente final.
And not to mention the dialogues so striking for the young Venezuelan public and any country that wants to know us better, full of words as common as: chama, marico, pajuo and ladilla. I am sure that anyone could easily connect with this wonderful and melancholic story. So far I hope I have encouraged you to read it and know what its surprising ending is.
