Inktober Day 3 // Windigo

in #art6 years ago

Good evening, ghouls and ghosts. Gather 'round for Inktober Day 3!

Today's theme, according to the Drawlloween list, was cryptids. For those unaware, cryptids are defined as "an animal whose existence or survival to the present day is disputed or unsubstantiated". Think Bigfoot, Chupacabras, the Jersey Devil, the Lochness monster, etc.

Twas a theme I was particularly excited for but one that took me a surprisingly long time to do. In fact, I redid it last minute.

Here was my first go at it:

Not horrible but the landscape just really wasn't working for me. It felt...fake. Now, I know all drawings are "fake". I'm not conjuring up any real scenery. But the environment just didn't feel convincing. It felt too flat. So last minute, I found a good reference photo (something I was lacking the first round) and gave it one more shot.

This was the drawing I ended up slapping all over social media. I'm much happier with how it came out. And funny enough, it took me a fraction of the time to complete than the first one. Amazing how much easier a good reference photo makes life.

Now, I'm off to go see what Inktober drawings everyone on Steemit has come up with for today!

For those of you who want to participate, here are the prompt lists I am loosely working off of:

P.S.

For tonight's horror movie, I will be watching As Above So Below. I've never seen it and I don't know if it's any good but I'm giving it a shot!

What a beautiful monster this one is.

I really like both backgrounds that you drew, I like the first one because it made the monster closer and bigger, but the second one feels more ... real? Well I'm glad you showed us both versions. ^_^

I haven't watched that movie, so can't comment about it. I'm curious whether you will like it or not :).

i love this one, theresa <3 and i love both versions too... although the one you ended up publishing is my favourite out of the two, also <3 gorgeous composition <3

i didn't about about cryptids ! what a wonderful word :D

Another cool one @la-fumettista. I love anything with horns. I really do think I might try and combine the words, so today would be 'mushroom' and 'spell' I mean that's a pretty good combo for a witch theme. We'll see.

Yes reference photos are always a big help. Sometimes I feel like I spend as much time laying out a drawing as actually executing it, but it's sort of half the fun too!

So spooky, I wouldn't like to meet this creature in woods @la-fumettista.

I think the first landscape is pretty good actually - good depth, and dramatic that the white body seems to come out of the black trunk.

What a creepy fellow you've got here; I do like the second background better too! Nice work @la-fumettista :)
