All Images are from the label for today's Beer - The Edmund Fitzgerald Porter made by the Great Lakes Brewing Company in Cleveland Ohio

I had one of these last night, and one about a week ago, and a couple the few weeks before that.....wait....

I Like to do a Little Research

When I come across a beer where the label reads

...Our Porter is a bittersweet tribute to the legendary freighter’s fallen crew—taken too soon when the gales of November came early.

So I set out to find out the history of this ship.

The Titanic of The Great Lakes

This was one of the largest iron ore running ships in the great lakes region from the mid 1950's until its fateful day in November 1975. The mines were in Duluth Minnesota and the boat headed east through the great lakes making stops in Detroit, Toledo, and sometimes Cleveland. It had a long run as one of the largest ships of its time and its ability to hold up to 26,000 tons of weight. Cities and towns across the midwest benefited from its existence. Maritime laws were changed to make the shipping industry more accountable because of the disappearance of the SS Fitzgerald. Actually - there is a great wiki on The SS Edmund Fitzgerald where I stole...er...adapted that short summary....It actually names the Edmund Fitzgerald beer on the page....as a novelty item trying to cash in on the fame of the "historical narrative" of the ship....lol, irony.

Anywho - There is Even a Song About This Ship

Remember above from the quote on the label "...taken too soon when the gales of November came early." That's actually a lyric from a Gordon Lightfoot song that tells the tale of the ships demise. It's actually a pretty cool tune if you're into that shit.

The disappearance of the Edmund Fitzgerald remains one of the great unsolved mysteries in maritime history.

The beer is a 6.0% ABV porter. Well rated and won some awards in the 90's. It's Bittersweet. Not Bad.
