3D Printed Mason Bee Incubation Box - Macro Photography

in #bees4 years ago (edited)

Using my new GH3 camera and a macro lens, I got some close up photos of this 3D printed object. It took over 6 hours for the printer to make this. And close up each layer of resin can be seen in its design, using a macro lens and some bright lights. A debossed Mason Bee logo is on the front of the box and the lid. Really impressed with how well the design came out.

Using my Steem design in the background worked well, adding an extra touch to the photos.

I wonder how many layers there is in making this box, I got to ask @whangster79. Looks like hundreds if not thousands of lines of resin just to make a box a few inches tall.

The debossed Bee on the top of the box and the front is a nice touch. When @whangster79 was working on the top box fitting he removed the designs as seen in the previous photo.

Inside the box, there are walls to seperate the outside of the box and to keep predators out until the cocoons hatch and the Bees can safely emerge.

Its really impressive what his 3D printer can do, hes using a CR-10 Micro Swiss hot end filament tube for laying the resin layer by layer.

More details on his rig below.

All of the lines of resin can be seen on the outside and the inside. The side of it raised up due to no foundation being used inside the 3D printer housing. Not a big deal, I dont think the Bees will care. These homes should hold a few dozen cocoons each. I probably need to put them in a single layer. Looking at pictures online most people do not overfill them. Since a have a few hundred cocoons to release in about a month Ill probably need to use some plates and other things to lay them out in the sun and hope animals like birds dont goto town on them.

Guess you can make them in different colors...

Yeah I think it's all in the dyes the 3d printer resin used. I'd have to ask my friend.
