From 2015 to 2018 we observed the two species of endemic birds known as the Yellow-headed Brushfinch; Atlapetes flaviceps and the Tolima Dove Leptotila conoveri at Finca Buena Vista located in El Líbano, a municipality in the north of the department of Tolima in Colombia, South America. Geographical coordinates (4 ° 55'N 75 ° 05'W) at an elevation of 1,819 meters above sea level. The observations were made thanks to the fact that we lived on the farm submerged in the task of eradicating the traditional monocultures and transforming the land into a productive and diversified forest.
Desde el año 2015 hasta el 2018 observamos las dos especies de aves endémicas conocidas como el Gorrión Montes de Anteojos; Atlapetes flaviceps y la Tolima Dove Leptotila conoveri en la Finca Buena Vista ubicada en El Líbano, municipio al norte del departamento del Tolima en Colombia, Sur América. Coordenadas geográficas (4°55´N 75°05´W) a una elevación de 1.819 m.s.n.m. Las observaciones se dieron gracias a que vivíamos en la finca sumergidos en la tarea de erradicar los tradicionales monocultivos y transformando la tierra en un bosque productivo y diversificado.
At first we were unaware of the importance of these two endemic bird species and did not know that they had serious problems, such as being in a category of endangered (EN) and vulnerable (V) (1) and, honestly, not being so colorful and flashy we did not pay enough attention, because we observed them frequently. I think I was personally delighted with the bright hummingbirds and the colorful tanagers, almost blind to such beauty forming God's creation.
Al inicio desconocíamos la importancia de éstas dos especies de aves endémicas y menos sabíamos que tenían serios problemas como estar en una categoría de peligro (EN) y vulnerabilidad (V)(1) y sinceramente al no ser tan coloridas y llamativas no prestábamos la atención suficiente, pues las observábamos con frecuencia. Creo que en lo personal estaba encantada con los brillantes colibríes y las coloridas tangaras, casi ciega a tanta belleza que encierra la creación de Dios.
On the other hand our focus and concentration was on the recovery of the soil and the inclusion of native plant species (timber, fruit, ornamental and medicinal) that would enrich the ecology of the place - from the seedbeds to the seedlings that are currently trees and shrubs which provide shade and food for different species, and shelter for a large number of birds. The most exciting part of the experience was that every day we spent there we began to observe more birds that seemed to thank us with their melodious songs at any time of the day.
Por otro lado nuestro enfoque y concentración estaba en la recuperación del suelo y la inclusión de especies de plantas nativas (maderables, frutales, ornamentales y medicinales) que enriquecieran la ecología del lugar - desde los semilleros hasta las plántulas que en la actualidad son árboles y arbustos los cuales dan sombra, proporcionan alimento a diferentes especies, y refugio a un gran número de aves. Lo más emocionante de la experiencia fue que cada día que pasamos allí empezamos a observar más aves que parecían agradecernos con sus melodiosos cantos a cualquier hora del día.

We observe this species visiting the passionfruit plants; Passiflora ligularis, Passiflora edulis and crossing the gardens apparently looking for insects about 90 centimeters from the ground, this species of bird moves in an agile manner between the tissues of the branches of different plants, at the beginning very quiet and cautious, the most comfortable and high that we have observed has been on the fruits of a banana plant, Muza paradisciaca .
Ésta especie la observamos visitando las pasifloras; Passiflora ligularis, Passiflora edulis y atravesando entre los jardines al parecer buscando insectos a unos 90 centímetros del suelo, ésta especie de ave se desplaza ágil entre los tejidos de las ramas de diferentes plantas, al inicio muy callado y cauteloso, lo más cómodo y alto que lo hemos observado ha sido sobre los frutos de una planta de plátano;Muza paradisciaca.
We also observed it on the shrubs of Carrancho or Trompeto, Bocconia frutescens , on the cordoncillo shrub Piper angustifolium and among the old coffee plantations.

At the farm we decided to leave a coffee plantation that may be about thirty years old, because we found many different bird nests and mammals burrows, this area is a great refuge for wildlife, which we wish in the future will be true for the entire farm

La Tolima Dove; como su nombre común lo indica es la paloma del departamento del Tolima la Leptotila conoveri, es una especie de ave endémica de Colombia y se encuentra en nuestro departamento.
We have seen this species on the ground just below the shrubs of Bocconia frutescens, when we walk along the trails on the farm it can be heard as a whistle, it is such a particular sound that the species makes when lifting the flight; it is a very shy species, she quickly seeks refuge in the plant of guadua angustifolia that is about nine meters from the most developed bushes of Bocconia and when she no longer hears any sounds she returns to the ground and continues eating from the seeds of the desired shrub.
Ésta especie la hemos observado en el suelo justo debajo de los arbustos de Bocconia frutescens, cuando caminamos por los senderos en la finca se puede escuchar como un silbido, es un sonido tan particular que la especie realiza al alzar el vuelo, es una especie muy tímida, ella rápidamente busca refugio en la planta de guadua angustifolia que queda a unos nueve metros de los arbustos más desarrollados de Bocconia y cuando ya no escucha sonidos regresa al suelo y sigue comiendo de las semillas del apetecido arbusto.

El Atlapetes flaviceps y la Leptotila conoveri son en la actualidad una prioridad en la finca, luego de conocer que son dos especies de aves endémicas de Colombia, las cuales deben de enfrentar varias amenazas que ponen en riesgo su permanencia en el planeta.
Currently we continue with the good agro-forestry and permaculture practices that we have been carrying out, taking into account each of the shrubs of Bocconia frutescens , both large and well developed and babies that are just growing, this one shrub spreads and grows easily; we now know that this shrub species is vital to provide food to both the Atlapetes f. and Tolima dove and other birds that I will tell you about later.
Actualmente continuamos con las buenas prácticas agro-forestales y permacultura que hemos venido realizando, teniendo muy en cuenta cada uno de los arbustos de Bocconia frutescens tanto los grandes y bien desarrollados y los bebes que apenas están creciendo, éste arbusto se propaga y crece con facilidad, pues ya conocemos que ésta especie arbustiva es vital al brindar alimento tanto al Atlapetes f, como a la Tolima dove y a otra cantidad de aves que luego les contaré.
We are proud to be part of this conservation strategy to save two Colombian endemic birds and also to know that we can contribute from the most local with the permanence of Atlapetes flaviceps and the Leptotila conoveri .

Ahora debemos replicar lo aprendido y ampliar el rango de comunicación con los vecinos campesinos de la vereda el Agrado, generando una estrategia educativa que enriquezca el conocimiento de los locales sobre la importancia de la conservación del habitad para las dos especies de aves endémicas.
