It‘s time for a complete overhaul of our approach to cleaning our home. All those expensive cleaning products, laundry detergent, dish soap and even floor cleaners, can easily be replaced with natural, homemade products. So today we continue the series by sharing more hints and tips on how to do everyday chores in an inexpensive alternative natural way.

MATTRESS CLEANER:

All you require for this task is baking soda and a vacuum cleaner.

• Vacuum the entire mattress thoroughly.
• Clean any stains. (See section on Stains) Be careful not to get the mattress too wet, as that can encourage mold if it doesn't dry completely.
• Sprinkle baking soda all over the mattress and let it sit for approximately 2 hours
• Vacuum off the baking soda.

MOTH DAMAGE PREVENTION

There is nothing more annoying than unpacking last season‘s clothing to find your favourite
woollens full of holes. The common clothes moth (Tineola bisselliella), has been blamed for the damage, but it's actually the larvae, and not the moths, that are responsible for the damage. Here is a non-toxic way to prevent this.

• ½ lb. each rosemary and mint
• ¼ lb. each tansy and thyme
• 2 Tbsp. powdered cloves.

Mix the ingredients and scatter in trunks and bags containing furs and woollens.

I am offering a safe and natural alternative to conventional treatment, but these recipes, ideas and treatment should not be misconstrued or substituted for medical advice. Please always proceed with caution and test it first on a small area, or in small quantities, if you are uncertain. Should you suspect that you or your animal have a medical problem, I urge you to seek professional advice.

Thanks for the tips! I try to use as little chemical stuff as possible. So I use minimal cleaning products. Sometimes to the detriment of things being as clean as they should be. My mattress is definitely been getting funky. Tomorrow that sucker is getting a baking soda vacuuming!!

hahaha, I am so glad you are finding these tips useful @derekrichardson. Very soon I am going to publish my book that contains all there little hints and tips. They do come in handy and they do preserve our environment!

Exactly, we've gone to as much natural cleaning as possible. A lot of the modern cleaners are just marketing gimmicks to get you to spend gobs of money on cheap ingredients.

100% true, this is why I try to keep away from them as much as possible @toddjohnson

Some handy tips for those who need those specific things. Mattress is the only one for me but mine has a protector and sheet to keep it clean.

Hi @thegoliath, protector sheets are good for keeping it clean, however they dont stop the tiny little microscopic bugs from getting into your mattress, so an occasional vacuum is a good idea!

Good advice, thank you for taking your time to present it. We need to be reminded from time to time about this simple and yet so important things.

thanks for visiting @zen-art, and I glad to have "reminded" you, haha as you said we all a reminder now and then!

The baking powder trick also works well on carpet odor, and extra well if you add in a few herbs to give a slightly better smell.

I didn't know about the mildew remover though, I'll have to try that in the bathroom at some point. Also nice to know there's an alternative to moth balls, those things smell so awful. I never had to use them but I know my mom always hated it because her clothes would come out from storage smelling horrible so she'd have to wash them straight away. Plus moth balls are so bad for pets ):

Thanks for sharing these tips. Always nice to remember that modern cleaning products are not always needed and there are more natural remedies ^^

I like the idea of the clothes moth repellent cloves mix. Your cloths would smell so much better after storage.

yes and not have holes in them @gmatthe2
