After celebrating my latest financial victory of becoming debt free, my mind often wanders to the next step. The last two years have been eagerly planning this moment and while luck accelerated the journey, it is still far from over. Many sacrifices were made but have been well worth it as I now feel like a blank canvas is in front of me to determine the next step. However, the challenge is how to remain on the right side of the financial spectrum while still having large financial mountains to climb?

The sacrifices have brought costs as well and while it is mainly opportunity, the markets are currently very volatile to determine the cost of continuing forward. For example, the family sold a vehicle and our home to achieve our goals earlier than expected. The vehicle has been a great choice as we have not needed it with the flexibility around the jobs we have. However, being somewhat "homeless" is an area of concern considering how the housing market continues to heat up.

Not only did I likely leave a good amount of money on the table by selling, I also have exposed myself to more inflation as rents in the same markets have been tough to keep up with. Our first renewal already saw a 13% increase! This put us on the lookout to making a move before the lease expires. However, supply remains low despite the increase in prices. It may lead to not only over paying but also not finding our long term home.

Despite this risk, being where we are is well worth the sacrifices and challenges moving forward. I now feel that flexibility continues to increase from not only a location perspective but even a career perspective. I have always had an entrepreneurial mindset and being in this position gets me actively thinking of how I setup for myself in the coming years. "Corporate America" seems like a long term trap so this could be the opportunity to leverage my "peak" years and go on my own. It will be an interesting year of watching opportunities and risks go as we make some important decisions!
