Book Review - Your Money or Your Life by Alvin Hall

People will be familiar with Alvin Hall from his TV series, Your Money or Your Life. The series usually features someone whose spending is out of control, and who applies to the program for Hall to take a look at what they are doing and to prescribe a remedy.

Hall's book too concentrates heavily on the psychology of spending and debt and how to get out of it. He starts off with the basics, showing people how to get a grip on their spending patterns by keeping a diary, and then how to break these patterns. He then moves on to how to tackle debt and how to build savings.

There is a chapter on money dynamics within families and marriages (people with spendthrift spouses will understand how difficult it is to save if their spouse isn't on board about this). The book then covers some other financial basics - property, insurance, investment and pensions.

I personally feel that the early chapters on spending and debt are the most insightful in the book. I would recommend this book to anyone who is at this early stage of trying to regain control over spending and cutting debt.
