There's a lot to unpack here.

Seemingly, it's possible that Brandt committed the murder because of a previous association with his victim's mother. Still, that's not what Brandt stated as his motivation. Brandt claimed that he killed this eighteen-year-old, young man because he thought that the young man was an extremist, MAGA Republican.

Let's be real. If the political ideologies were flipped, and a forty-one-year-old Republican had mowed down an eighteen-year-old Democrat after a political dispute, this would be front page news. The Republican would still be in jail and facing first degree murder charges. We know this because that's what happened to the douche in Charlottesville.

Brandt is out on bail before the kid that he killed could even be buried. He's only facing ten years in prison despite effectively confessing to committing a premeditated murder.

All this having been said, we have to finally acknowledge that words are important. If you placate the morons who believe that words are violence, you're bound to get people who draw the conclusion that real violence is an appropriate response to words. We're seeing it all the time now. There has to be some cerebral output in our culture in regard to words. We have to toe that line of understanding that words are important and potentially dangerous, while also understanding that they are simply vibrations being ejected by a human mouth. Words should never be met with physical violence.

What's more, and this goes for everybody, even a basic understanding of the law of self-defense principles should tell you that what Brandt did wasn't legally justifiable. Brandt claimed that he was worried that his victim was calling up some right-wing cronies to come by and assault Brandt. That was false. Records show that the victim was calling his mom to ask for a ride because he felt threatened by Brandt. Even if that were true, even in states like Texas, Florida, and Arizona, which have great stand your ground policies, you can't just mow a guy over and kill him because you think that he may, potentially be calling some guys to rough you up. That's not how this works.

Unless there's some incredible shift in the facts of this case, Brandt should be charged with first degree murder, and he should spend the rest of his life in prison.
