1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal Coupé

in #car3 years ago

I love cars, especially Italian design in the 50's to 70's, and I live in Montreal... I had never heard before about this car the Alfa Romeo Montreal Coupé. If I would have been asked a few days ago if an Alfa Romeo penned by one the most famous Italian designer, Marcello Gandini, had the name of my city... I would have answered a big NO.

We learn every day and what is good in life, always new things to discover and see. So this week, Bonhams during its sale Les Grandes Marques du Monde in Paris this week offer this 1973 Alfa Romeo Montreal Coupé for about € 60,000 /$US 75,000.

History of Alfa Romeo Montreal

The Alfa Romeo Montreal was presented as a prototype during the Montreal Universal Exposition 1967 (video in the bonus video about this event). The car was based on the Alfa Romeo Giula Sprint GT with a coachwork penned, as I said in introduction by **Marcello Gandini, Italian car designer working for the Gruppo Bertone and known for his designs of the Lamborghini Miura, Countach, and Diablo.

The production of the 2+2 coupé sports car began in 1970 after his presentation during the 1970 Geneva Motor Show. As the concept car had received unofficially the name of Montreal from the public, Alfa Romeo kept this name.

The Alfa Romeo Montreal was based on the chassis of the Giulia GTV coupé with a more civilised version of the 2.6 L V8 engine than the prototype. These two elements were assembled in the Alfa Romeo plant in Arese (Italy) before to be sent to Bertone factory near Turin. At its launch, the car was more expensive than the Jaguar E-Type or the Porsche 911. The production stopped in 1977 with 3,925 examples built.

In terms of design, the most particular element is the four headlamps covered by half grilles that retract when the lights are on (as you can see on the photo of the front of the car).

Cool car but I'm not objective because it has the name of my city 😀. What do you think about it? Did you know this model?

I wish Alfa would engineer as the Germans do. But their cars are much much more pleasing for the eye.

For sure, Italian design with all the coackworkers Pininfarina, Zagato, Vignale, Bertone, Touring... was incredible in this era (50's to 70's).

el carro de mis sueños, jejeje.

As I didn't this model few days ago, not yet in my wishing list but great design with an affordable price.
