10 Facts About The New 2019 Supra

in #cars5 years ago

Welcome to Motor Speed News! Are you excited for the new A90 Supra? Because we most definitely are! We are way overdue on a new Supra. In this post, we cover 10 facts about the new 2019 Supra.

Fact 1 | The New Toyota Supra Is Rear-wheel Drive And Powered By A Straight-Six

In keeping with tradition, the new A90 will come with a straight six (turbocharged) or four-cylinder turbo if you want it and utilize a rear-wheel-drive setup.

Fact 2 | Toyota Teamed Up With BMW

The new 2019 Supra uses a BMW engine and shares parts with the new BMW Z4. Apparently, the two car companies were very active in co-development early on but split off as the projects progressed. The cars will share parts but they definitely won’t be twins. The new 2019 supra will be built as a coupe, while the 2019 BMW Z4 will be a roadster.

Fact 3 | The New 2019 Supra Will Be Built In Austria

The New Supra and Z4 will be built at a plant in Graz, Austria. The plant is run by Magna Steyr, which is an independent auto manufacturer. Magna Steyr is known for producing the Mercedes-Benz G-Class and two models for Jaguar.

Fact 4 | The New Supra’s Inline six engine will produce over 300 Horsepower

The BMW sourced turbocharged inline-six engine will likely put out around 340 horsepower. We expect the new Supra to have a 0-60 time below five seconds. The smaller alternative will be a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline four engine (also BMW). It will likely produce 240 to 260 hp.

Fact 5 | The Supra Will Feature A Body Stiffness Not Unlike The Lexus LFA

The world famous Lexus LFA has crazy body stiffness and rigidity. The new Supra is said to match it without using carbon fiber like the LFA. The New 2019 Supra will also feature a ridiculously low center of gravity, short wheelbase, and 50-50 weight distribution.

Fact 6 | Tetsuya Tada Is The Chief Engineer Of The New 2019 Supra

The man behind the new A90 Supra is none other than Tetsuya Tada, who is also responsible for the Toyota GT86 and its counterpart the Subaru BRZ. After the GT86 was released in 2012, Tada immediately started work on the new Supra.

Fact 7 | The Supra GRMN Will Be A Lightweight Track-Focused Option

The new Supra should get a superfast GRMN version! GRMN stands for Gazoo Racing tuned by “Meister of Nürburgring”. Gazoo Racing is Toyota’s new motorsport brand as they compete in WRC, WEC, and 24-hour Nürburgring.  GRMN offerings are sportier versions of most of Toyota’s cars including the Yaris and GT86. For the moment most GRMN cars are only available in Japan. We have no doubt that Toyota will soon sell GRMN cars around the world.

Fact 8 | The New Supra Is Made To Be Tuned And Modded!

Chief Engineer Tada has said that Toyota will be releasing the car specs early to aftermarket companies and specific tuners. So we can expect a good amount of products and tunes for the Supra right out of the gate. What’s more, the trunk is reinforced to hold a large rear wing and the front has pre-drilled holes for front splitters.

Fact 9 | We Can Expect Another Toyota Sportscar Soon

Toyota is looking to revive its three-tiered sportscar lineup like the had in the 90s. Back in the day Toyota’s sold the Supra, Celica, and MR2. It seems Toyota President Akio Toyoda wants to bring back the legendary trio, often called the Three Brothers. The Supra will take the top position as Toyota’s premium performance car and the GT86 will likely take the middle spot. That leaves us with the possibility of the return of the mid-engine MR2! Or at least Miata competitor.

Fact 10 | A Manual Gearbox Is Not Out Of The Question

We know both engine options for the new 2019 Supra will be offered with an eight-speed automatic transmission. What we don’t know is if the new A90 Supra will get a manual gearbox. The new 2019 BMW Z4 will only be sold with an automatic, which is not a good start. Chief Engineer Tada hasn’t said anything definitive about the transmission but when Toyota launches the Supra GRMN we will likely see a manual option.
