Steemit Inc censorship continues

in #censorship4 years ago

In a commit earlier today, leon-tron on GitHub edited the Steemit website F.A.Q. to remove some information about exchanges that they no longer want to promote.

At the end of the edits, in the same unrelated commit, they added in 15 more posts to completely block from the UI.

Early today I noticed @reseller mentioning his post was censored for posting a video on DTube how to turn your Steem into Hive via Blocktrades.

What triggers me they are putting two unrelated commits into one commit (updating F.A.Q. and then censoring posts). I'm a crappy developer and even I know this.

Looks like my Hive witness post was blocked, which is not surprising. Makes me feel important though. Maybe there should be a badge for that. You ain't cool unless your posts were blocked on Steemit!

It extends beyond Steemit, unfortunately. Search my name on google. #1 hit. Hit the images tab. Look where all those links point to. That's part of building a brand, correct? Anything else I ever placed high in the search rankings would be dead. Part of the reason why I went all in with my content on that blockchain was the fact the work was to never be deleted.

That repository isn't gonna get confusing at all down the road.

April Fools' Day is coming up. Are there any contests for posts mocking all this crap on that day? I infer from the name April Fools' Day it is in honor of steemit's new regime.

I think our focus is off, something else is going on around the TRON Foundation.

Who cares about Justin, the actor changes but the game stays the same. I think defense is over, we left the field. Maybe it's time for a counterattack now.

Is it possible to remove content permanently with a hardfork? If so, it's only a matter of time before they start removing content permanently with a subsequent hardfork. There's nothing leading me to believe they wouldn't do something like that.

Good question. Yes, the content could be dropped in a hardfork. Heimindanger is just confused: the blockchain immutability he's talking about only applies as long as no hardfork changes the rules.

I had a feeling that was the case. Thanks for the straight answer. Also, thanks for everything else lately. I'm impressed.

You can remove content in the sense it is no longer returned by the API but it will always show up under a block explorer if you look at the source blocks. Third party tools can then index and create a way to view it easier.

It's good to know they can't simply wipe it clean. So now I shift over to influence. I don't think I'd be wrong to assume at some point, other frontends will be pressured to delete content, or face 'consequences'. It's all one big central authority circle jerk with witnesses there now and I don't think any one of them will want to step out of line. One would probably need 'approval' first before they could develop a new App.

One issue is, say, child porn. You'd kind of hope that it is possible to remove content from the blockchain. Otherwise those running nodes(?) could be in a lot of trouble.

It's possible to remove content for legitimate reasons like that. I wouldn't produce content for a platform that allows such atrocities. Extreme examples of antisocial behavior like that certainly don't fit anywhere on a social network.

I prefer to have a place where I can explore the arts freely without the fear of petty differences cultivating nonsensical consequences. The removal of Hive related material on Steem is an example of petty differences cultivating nonsensical consequences. Marty over here had many years worth of work wiped over something he published on one day. That's completely irrational and hostile behavior coming from an entity posing as a savior.

So Heimen over there is a top twenty witness on Steem. Known to be emotionally unstable. Will my blog now be wiped on Steemit because I asked a question he didn't like?

I should't have to live with that kind of burden. I was talking to Marty. Not him. I won't even say anything on Steemit now because these people got a taste of power and now they're tripping. Can't be trusted. Can't feel free. Not cool.

Have you hooked up the pruner, yet?

I've been thinking about it.

Just tell me it's not possible. No need for all that attitude. There are things I can do where you'd be clueless, but I'd never come at you like that and attempt to make you feel dumb for not knowing. Am I supposed to feel dumb for asking a question or much smarter for getting an answer? There's no need to be disrespectful.

Socialize with people.

Be careful, he may threaten to cut your head off if you act too logical around him.

That might be about the only comeback I left for him. Oh well. Off with my head.

Hahaha.. Post of the day! :)

Of course, its possible. You can easily drop data in a hardfork.

Of course, I'm aware of how blocks are linked together. I'm not lying. You're just not thinking very hard.

Here's one easy way to do it (note that there are other ways): change the rules so that instead of a transaction containing the entire post, it just contains the hash of the post, then change the validation rules for the block to check for the correct hashes, instead of hashing the transaction contents to get the hash.

Steemit has thought about doing this optimization for years as a way to reduce the chain size.

AFAIK, EOS was planning this methodology for their social media site (may be implemented that way, never bothered to check).

You replace the content with a simple hash of the content, and you change the rules of validation to just check the hash. Are you really so simple minded that you can't understand this simple procedure? You've changed what is being verified. You can do a one time verification, to verify that the hashes in the new chain match the original blockchain's contents. Then you just never do it again and the chain goes forward, just putting hashes of contents in future blocks and leaving the contents in a separate database. The hashes in the chain can be used to "prove" that the contents in the database are correct and unforged.

If the above doesn't make this clear, I have to ask, are you a programmer that understands cryptography?

What "argument of authority" are you referencing? I'm not referring to any authority, I'm just explaining to you how this is done. Are you thinking that my mentioning that Steemit and EOS both were looking into this is somehow an argument of authority?

Isn't that what's going on on all the corporate social media sites?

Yup, decentralized is suppose to be different. Twitter bans, blocks, and deletes all the time. Reddit frequently shadow bans, and Facebook well I won't even go there.

"They know nothing!"

I'm starting to think it might be a badge of honor to make it on to the Steemit blocked list. Means you hit a nerve. Thanks for keeping an eye out ... almost like a sport, watching it impload.

So weird to see that Someone dislike a centralized blacklist service. Although I believe Sun Yuchen(Justin's real name) to be the greatest threat to the network, it somewhat ironic to see someone who believes that sharing a meme about BitCoin on the former DMania app back in 2018 to be a Blacklisting worthy offense.

People who were using dmania, were posting 5-10 times a day per account and typically had at least 2-3 accounts. They also were posting stolen memes from Reddit, not creating anything original, so basically trying to get paid for other people's work. But yah, exactly the same thing...

Nothing wrong with that as the platform encouraged it to do so.

typically had at least 2-3

Never used other than this account to post memes. My other account has the sole purpose of accumulate Account Creation Tickets for when I invite people to try Steempeak. One of those is a friend of mine who posts every couple days about homeschooling techniques. Last year I tried to teach the municipal president of the Social Liberal Party to use it but he didn't like the fact it has a limited range.

They also were posting stolen memes from Reddit

Try to use Reddit once in 2013. Found it too boring. Didn't used ever since. Most memes are from anonymous 4Channers, twitter and facebook cringy prints and some memes I receive via-WhatsApp or Telegram.

But at least I was not taking pictures from beaches in the Pacific Ocean. That surely deserved multiple flags as he was "stealing the landscape". He once liked a post of mine and made me look into his profile by that and I found his pictures to be quite good. Unfortunately he left this platform due to excessive bullying from someone who claims to be fighting for good content by flagging posts that would receive fractions of cents while allowing harmful stuff like anti-vaxxer conspiracy theories to receive over 20 STEEM/HIVE each. The only time when I managed to get over 10 STEEM/HIVE per post was back in 2018 when I made a 2 hour long stream on DLive complaining about the highway where I broke the left half of my face. I had plenty of time that year since I was in paid medical license for 60 days.

And it is quite weird to have such inferences of theft while there are people in this platform stealing the early artistic name of the actor Mark Wahlberg with Michael J. Fox face or some Firefly character and using it to sell votes in a "Whale Building" scam.

I think this is actually Mark Wahlberg

Hahahahahahahahahaha!
Wait...
Are you serious!?

It's not? He always like crypto

Clearly you can't read as I clearly said Steemit. Who the hell gives a damn about DTube, that shit barely works.

Help me out on this one.
So you're proud because your tool does not censor content placed on a blockchain that is controlled by a guy that is censoring content on his front end?
