Paradójicamente resulta usual ver tanto en los libros clásicos sobre el asunto científico (incluyendo los manuales educacionales) como en las revistas que en caliente se especializan en el tema, que es algo así como sobreentendido, como obvio, que toda (¡toda!) la ciencia se ocupa de la realidad objetiva y nada más que eso. Es, pues, altamente generalizado el criterio de que es la realidad objetiva (naturaleza y sociedad) el alfa y el omega del esfuerzo científico, quedando lo que está fuera de ese contexto, en el revuelto medio de lo que los marxistas denominan "ideológico", es decir en el terreno de lo especulativo, de lo no demostrado.

Una de estas maneras no agudas de ver la ciencia halla en los días de hoy (repletos de computación, informática, inteligencia artificial, etc.) significativo desprecio a lo que tiene que ver con el tema de la virtualidad. Sí, el espectro de lo virtual. Claro, cuando hablamos de virtualidad estamos refiriéndonos a algo muchísimo más complejo, pertinente e interesante que la connotación (ahora de moda) de relacionar todo el contexto que la palabra encarna, con la noción de incluir de manera generalista y aplanada, todo lo que incluya ordenadores, cursos a distancia, monitores, etc. Agregamos... cuando hablamos de virtualidad estamos tomando toda la distancia del mundo en cuanto a la estúpida onda (también ahora de moda) de decir, por ejemplo, "esto o aquello es una realidad virtual o una virtualidad real". No, no, no. ¡Mil veces no! Si algo es virtual es porque es posible, mas no real. En cuanto a lo primero recién planteado, hay que decir que lo virtual va mucho más allá del muy útil y versátil recurso de la electrónica, la computación, la informática... En cuanto a lo segundo recién expuesto, hay que decir que jamás puede concebirse una virtualidad de carácter "real" ni una realidad de carácter "virtual". Toda virtualidad denota probabilidad, abstracción; mas no concreción real.
This way of looking at science is closely related to a thousand other myopic ways of taking on the fascinating subject. Se nos ocurre referir para finalizar este artículo, que existen estructuras lingüísticas las cuales incluyen en sus respectivos cuerpos de signos, más tiempos que el pasado, el presente y el futuro, tan terminalmente asumidos por lenguas como las nuestras. La lengua hopi, por ejemplo, es una de ésas. ¡Cuán útil sería para nuestra cultura "oficial y occidental" que dejando de considerar esa lengua hopi y otras, a través del típico desdén con el cual en no pocas ocasiones tratamos a las tales "culturas minoritarias", pudiéramos hacer efectivas esas potencialidades de signo y pensamiento!
It occurs to us to refer to finish this article, that there are linguistic structures which include in their respective bodies of signs, more times than the past, the present and the future, so terminally assumed by languages like ours. The Hopi language, for example, is one of those. Bien. Si bien es cierto que es la realidad objetiva el apoyo de la ciencia, ésta también incluye todo aquello que tiene que ver con la virtualidad. No olvidemos que para tratar lo real, la comprobación es definitoria. Tampoco olvidemos que para tratar lo virtual, la honra a una lógica asumida (y proyectada a punta de giros) resulta asimismo definitoria.
