We believe, in social life, that writing is the most prestigious and consummate manifestation of language in terms of its permanence, which is still true in the practical and documentary sense. It is always at our disposal to inquire, recognize or simply read i.

Since our childhood in school classrooms we have been taught that oral communication is the most basic of forms of social contact, exchange of ideas and understanding between human beings. In fact, the meaning of talking, among other meanings, whose etymological origin comes from the Latin conversāre, means that, said of one or more people, it is about communicating and having friendship with one or more others (Dictionary of the Royal Spanish Academy, 2020).

We are taught that, from civility and good manners, we must maintain an appropriate tone of voice, not interrupt while speaking, listen carefully to the chatterbox, not meddle in other people's conversations, among other things. In short, what was once called the rules of a good speaker and a good listener.

Not surprisingly, anyone knows how to distinguish between those spontaneous and unplanned conversations, those that go hand in hand with work, family and social bustle, and other more formal and structured conversations, making the observation that in these broadcasts they can be presented gray borders and imprecise boundaries.

When we talk, we do more than just talk. The conversation allows us to relate and deal with the other members of the social environment, work cooperatively, obtain information, achieve wishes or requests and even break friendship or companionship relationships, stopping talking.

The conversation seen from philosophy, linguistics and pragmatics

Various authors, especially from philosophy and linguistics, have argued that speakers not only decode sentences, but also manage to infer non-explicit sentences. This is possible thanks to the fact that the speakers make use of the language based on certain rules or prior collaborative agreements.

From the time of Grice (1967) and Searle (1986), such rules or principles were to serve to make the linguistic mechanism of conversation work. This means that to analyze the conversation one must be guided not by the semantic properties of the words, but by the regulatory principles of the conversation.

The principle of cooperation

In this case, the interlocutors have a common purpose and seek to achieve it through the principle of cooperation. In this sense, it can be said that verbal communication is fundamentally inferential and not merely as a simple encoding / decoding statements expressed as signs, letters and symbols. Communication does not work without a context in which the participants. interact in a conversation.

Each of the participants in a conversation has a mental world associated with their "sphere of thoughts" around previous experiences of what they have learned, remembered, what they have experienced throughout their lives or what they have read or said before, and also of perceptions current of the moment These mental processes are what trigger the mechanisms of inferences that are happening at the speed of light as we speak.

How do the speakers / listeners manage to determine the elements that make it possible to produce inferences when a conversation takes place, among so much data where enormous content and information are involved?

The philosopher of language Herbert. Paul Grice in 1975 argues that it is possible to make inferences regarding what is not said when the speakers comply with the so-called “Principle of Cooperation”, which is nothing more than a tacit agreement that is established simultaneously around what is being discussed, it is say that this is appropriate to the purpose or direction that is sought in such verbal interaction, that they are competent to recognize it and thus be able to understand each other (Grice, 1975).

The "Principle of Cooperation" is developed in four maxims:

  1. Of quantity: that whatever the issue is as informative as possible, that it is accurate, but that it does not exceed it with unnecessary or inappropriate information.
  2. Of quality : that the information is true. Do not say what is not false or that you do not have enough evidence.
  3. Relative : do not say what does not concern what is spoken. This maxim could be related to the first in terms of what is not appropriate to the topic proposed in the conversation.
  4. So: that there is no ambiguity in the above, that is, be clear in the statements, which means that it must be ordered in the sentence sequences (Tusón, 1977; Portolés, 1988).

The Principle of Cooperation governs the entire conversational process. Grice argues that an utterance does not always correspond directly to the meanings of the linguistic expressions used. It also suggests that what appear to be aspects of meaning may actually be due to “conversational implicatures”, assuming that the speaker is trying to cooperate so that the listener (s) come to understand or in any case consider and reflect on what the speaker says.

It is clear that the principles and maxims of cooperation are not always strictly adhered to, and yet the speakers continue to understand each other. Even when the speakers transgress one or more maxims, the interlocutors assume that the principle of cooperation is still being fulfilled. If this were to happen, it means that listeners subject what was broadcast to implicatures.

The examples that Grice proposes explain these processes: if you say "Alberto is in New York or Boston", in ordinary and normal conditions it implies that whoever says it does not know where he is (principles of quantity and quality), and in the Conversation analysis is not about finding out the semantic meaning of “o… o” in the sentence as something special in signification, but in what, under normal conditions, the listener would expect to hear if it were known where Alberto is.

In the same way, in another example, the apparent difference in meaning between “Maria turned off the light and closed the door” and “Maria closed the door and turned off the light” is shown. This should not be seen as that the spelling "and" can mean "sometimes" and sometimes "below" (which would correspond to a semantic analysis), but rather that in the pragmatic analysis of the conversation (pragmatic), the speaker Common will relate the fact in an orderly way, so that a listener assumes that the events referred to occurred in a certain sequence (principle of mode or modality).

Finally, to understand that talking is not only talking, Portolés (1998) considers it, in the sense that in the analysis of the conversation the purely grammatical part of the interpretive part must be demarcated, that is, between what is said and what is interpreted, in addition to the mechanisms that make what is said understood. Pragmatics deals with these interpretations, which in reality is a science still in development, even with many advances today.
