This time I want to talk to you about natural colors, bringing you an example of a nice portrait I made taking my friend Daniela as a model with whom I have my longest-standing friendship, now 16 years old. Among all my friends, she is the craziest of the group, she is very outgoing and she is also incredibly funny. Thanks to this I wanted to use it as a model to practice with natural colors, why? Because they give the feeling that she brings to the group.
Esta vez quiero hablarles de los colores naturales, trayéndoles de ejemplo un lindo retrato que hice tomando como modelo a mi amiga Daniela con la que tengo mi relación de amistad más longeva, ya de 16 años. Entre todas mis amigas, ella es la más loca del grupo, es muy extrovertida y también es increíblemente graciosa. Gracias a esto quise usarla como modelo para practicar con los colores naturales, ¿por qué? Porque dan la sensación que ella trae al grupo.
Perhaps some are wondering what natural colors are, so I give you a little explanation: natural colors are called dyes that are derived from everything that has to do with nature, that is, plants, minerals, fungi, lichens and/or invertebrates. The vast majority of natural colors come from plants and their parts, such as leaves, bark, fruit, or roots; with these examples we can already understand a little more what I mean when I speak of natural colors in this portrait. Of course, with Daniela's warm, not completely light but not dark skin, we have natural colors, just like in her eyes, which is one of the details that stand out the most in the drawing, however, I wanted her to notice much more My friend's clothes, which have much warmer autumn tones, which make a good contrast with the other tones of the drawing as such.

Tal vez algunos se estén preguntando que son los colores naturales, así que les doy una breve explicación: se les llama colores naturales a los tintes o colorantes que son derivados a todo lo que tenga que ver con la naturaleza, es decir, plantas, minerales, hongos, líquenes y/o invertebrados. La gran mayoría de los colores naturales vienen de plantas y de sus partes, como por ejemplo las hojas, la corteza, sus frutos o las raíces; con estos ejemplos ya podemos entender un poco más a lo que me refiero cuando hablo de colores naturales en este retrato. Claro, con la piel cálida, no completamente clara pero tampoco oscura de Daniela, tenemos unos colores naturales, al igual que en sus ojos que es uno de los detalles que más resaltan en el dibujo, sin embargo, quería que se notara mucho más el ropa de mi amiga, que tiene tonos de otoño muchos más cálidos, que hacen un buen contraste con los otros tonos del dibujo como tal.
That the oranges and the autumn tones are in the clothes has more meaning than can be expected, since the origin of the natural colors comes from the old fabrics in the Neolithic, using more than all the color that is seen on the shirt: the orange. Later, in Mesopotamia, Egypt and the Mediterranean, in the Bronze Age, they began to use more blue (like the one seen in their eyes), later they reached yellow and ended with green.

I advise many beginners in drawing to practice their natural color palette with clothes and portraits, as opposed to doing it with landscapes and vegetation, as ironic as it may seem, these types of drawings use many more colors than just the natural, having a derivative and a gradient of them. It must be remembered that natural colors are very "rough", since for the era in which they were discovered, only one type of color was needed and this gave life to the garments. Thus, following the example of ancient civilizations, you can give a more classic tone to people and their outifits, with that vintage tone that is now very in mood.
Les aconsejo a muchas personas principiantes en el dibujo que practiquen su paleta de colores naturales con la ropa y retratos, a diferencia de hacerlo con paisajes y vegetaciones, ya que por más irónico que parezca, este tipo de dibujos usan muchos más colores que solo los naturales, teniendo un derivado y un degradado de ellos. Hay que recordar que los colores naturales son muy “toscos”, ya que para la era en la que fueron descubiertos solo se necesitaba un tipo de color y con este se le daba vida a las prendas. Así, siguiendo el ejemplo de las civilizaciones antiguas, podrás darle un tono más clásico a las personas y a sus outifits, con ese tono vintage que ahora está muy de moda.
Finally, if you made it this far, I want to invite you to practice (if you like drawing) and not just stick with practice. You can search for all kinds of information about the style of drawing you are practicing or the color palette you are using, in order to enter context and understand in a more appropriate way what you are doing. It is a step that, although it is not practical in drawing as such, will give you the facility to demonstrate emotions or stories using more subtle tools.
